Jen, where you there when Jared asked us if we were groupies? It was really funny. Yay for SF groupies.

No, Jenn wasn't there sadly. It was just me, you and Stacey.

On the Olive question, I hadn't thought about that before. I still think that her mom is probably really in India. Depressed, but in India. Either way it's a sad song.

Violet's mom? Who is that? The I Love You Song is officially ruined for me because of the adult show. I will now forever think of the hollywood clinic and mom all bandaged up, and seasons of love, and just laugh.

I am seeing the show tomorrow night, yay!

3 new names on the cast board in the lobby today-
Robin, Sarah, and Lee. I know Robin is understudying Marcy Park, who are the others? Anyone know?

My dad was an audience speller tonight! I found this show hysterical!

Back to Dirty Rotten Guy's question. Is there anything earlier in the show that might suggest that Olive's mom is in the hospital suffering from depression. It seems to me it would make sense with her character. Of course, I've only seen the show once. I think it is an interesting possibility.

Jud,
Dirty Rotten Scoundrel's mother's interpretation does have some basis if one considers Olive's mother's words----"Depression runs in our family" during the I Love You song.
However, an argument against this reading is that the character that morphed into Olive was originally Beth Margulies, played by Rebecca Feldman during C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E. The parents were based loosely on her own. Rebecca has mentioned that her own dad was a workaholic and she was always trying to get his attention and her mother was always on a spiritual quest.
Being somewhat of a historian of this show, I would not endorse the hospitalization theory.

I apologize--I was referencing Dirty Rotten Guy's mother's interesting interpretation---not DRS...

Liotte, what are the new people's last names?
And is there any word on Deborah's return yet?

They took out the music when they say the word "Tornados", it was weird the first time I heard that.

Deborah says that she is "almost all better" (her words), so hopefully she will be back soon. Lisa is still doing an excellent job.

Sarah Stiles is covering the female parts except for Marcy Park, which Robin is covering. Sarah is now listed in the playbill, Kate is no longer there. And Lee is covering Coneybear, as far as I know. Perhaps another male role as well (Panch or Barfee?)

Thanks, CL. That makes sense. It's always interesting to hear the background of a show. I wonder if Rebecca's mother was suffering from depression?

Jud,
My understanding was that Rebecca's mom is a gifted and accomplished woman who was fascinated by the spiritual.
I do not believe she suffered from depression. I think that the reference to depression in the I Love You Song was more a Finn lyrical comment than a truism. That line always gets a laugh...
I do think it is an interesting interpretation if you don't know the historical background.

CL,
Yes it is an interesting interpretation. When I saw the show, I just assumed Olive's mom was on a spiritual quest (something that Rebecca's mom probably would have liked). It wouldn't have occured to me to interpret it the way DRG's mom did. But Olive does seem to be kind of depressed, although maybe lonely is a better description. So having a depressed mother is a possibility. Or maybe another possibility is that Olive thinks her mother is depressed. A kid would probably not understand a spiritual journey, so maybe she puts it in a perspective that she could understand. In any case, Olive is probably similar to so many kids in the world, starved for their parents attention, but her parents are cluelessly off doing their own thing. Very tragic.

Our awareness of Olive's plight begins when Rhona asks,"Who brought you to the Bee dear?"---When Olive answers the bus, and then proceeds to sing about she has saved a chair for her parents--but it's merely symbolic---I think our heart begins to break for this lonely neglected darling child.
It culminates with her plaintiff cry---"If I go to Washington, who will be my chaperone?"
In her transcript, Olive informs us that she grew up to be a loving attentive parent.---
This Bee contains the best life's lessons....

So you guys didnt even think Olive's mom was depressed at all? My interperetation was that Olive's mom was infact depressed but on her spiritual retreat to try and overcome her depression by trying to find some sort of spiritual epiphany. I guess I just figured she was depressed because on top of the fact that she says that depression runs in their family, she also says that Olive's sadness filled her room, thus making her depressed. Mabye I am just crazy though but I thought that was kind of straight foward.

Anyway, yeah I was very suprised by my mom's interperetation of it and it would never have crossed my mind in a million years. Thanks for all your thoughts, I find them very interesting to read. :)

DRG and CL,
I also find these thoughts really interesting. I obviously need to see this show again, and to get the soundtrack. I have heard many of the songs again on this website, but I think having the soundtrack and reading the lyrcis will help me to more deeply understand what these characters are dealing with. The show had a profound effect on me from only seeing it once, although it's beauty is clearly magnified by reading all of the very insightful comments on this board. I'm happy to be posting here, because you are all clearly very fond of the show and also realize how it contains wonderful "life lessons." The "kids" in this show are very representative of real kids with real issues.

Wow - Creative Lunatic: you ARE a historian on this show. I just saw it a few weeks ago and loved it. Are you attached to the show??? Can you get me in to meet Jose Llana?

Nit---As anyone who has seen it can tell you... Jose as well as all the other wonderful cast members are totally accessible after the show. They all come out and are more than willing to spend time, sign and take pictures.
You don't need any special introductions.
