I know! Geez! Disney made a fun show that everybody likes. LORD!
Everybody likes? Who is this "everybody" you speak of? The critics certainly don't like it. I felt lukewarm about it, as have many other theatergoers. Have you seen it, Princeton?
I know at least a handful of Tony voters, and do not think MARY POPPINS has a chance. No matter how accomplished it is, it's still a reworking of a Disney film, its overall feel not dissimilar. Much too much was made of it being "darker." I don't know anyone who feels it's radically different from the Andrews-Van Dyke film. That does not help its cause with Tony voters.
At this stage anyway, GREY GARDENS and SPRING AWAKENING are in the FOLLIES and TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA positions, to revisit a famous battle of wildly different but equally innovatives shows. AVENUE Q beat WICKED. CHORUS LINE beat CHICAGO. I would never assume the more conservative voters will win out.
Mary Poppins is making 1 million dollars per week at the box office. Someone is liking it.
I've not seen it, but i've liked what i've seen of the previews and I have seen Spring Awakening and thought it was far less than lukewarm.
The critics didn't like Mary Poppins?
I just used my old pal the search engine and came up with the following.
"The AP is Positive"
"Jacques Le Sourd is very positive"
"Theatremania is Mixed-to-Positive"
"Variety is Positive"
"NY Daily News is very positive"
"NY Post is positive"
Doesn't sound like an all out dismissal to me :)
You're correct, princeton. The majority of people who see MARY POPPINS are loving it, or at least enjoying it. The New York Times panned it, but the other major publications did not despise it.
And back to the score debate, I am with CurtainPullDowner. SPRING AWAKENING has some haunting melodies and interesting parts - it's a brilliant score - but the score to GREY GARDENS is absolutely more deserving of the award. I know I'm in the minority.
Whoever's in charge of marketing and publicity should be fired.
EXACTLY! Wasn't SA on CBS This Morning or something like that over the weekend? Who knew? They have golden reviews...reviews that a lot of shows would kill for and they're gonna blow it if they don't strike while the iron is hot. Those kids should be all over the city making appearances. They should be hitting The View, Regis and Kelly, Letterman, the Today Show...etc. It'll be boring to see a show that has closed take home the Best Musical Tony.

I roll my eyes every time the Grey Gardens commercial airs. My reaction to that score is the same I had to Light in the Piazza. Pretty, but entirely too pretentious.
Pretentious? Uh...what?

I can't explain it, Munk.. it just.. I don't know... both shows have great scores that felt like vanity pieces to me.
Look up pretentious in the dictionary and you will find Sater's lyrics for SA.
But I love the Sheik's music.
I don't understand that at all. You must hate Sondheim.

Munk, I have my personal feelings on Sondheim, yes. I also have my opinion of his work. Some of his shows I adore, others I simply despise.
For me, I sat through the first act of Grey Gardens thinking to myself, "THIS is the music that people are raving about??" It may get better upon repeated listening, but I found most of it boring and the same.
However, I was glad to have seen Ebersol's and Wilson's amazing performances. I just wouldn't pay to see it again. That's just me.

What is this commercial people have seen on TV? I want to see it! What songs and parts are featured?
Sorry, just curious...
Yay! Six more months of infighting to look forward to.
