They dress like a middle aged person would, basically their normal clothes. It's just confusing to see the adult woman sing backup on the teen girl songs because well, the whole seperation between adults and children is so distinct in the musical and this kind of messes it up.
If Gerard said it I believe it. Hell I would believe anything that cutie said. But Equity requires understudy rehearsals, and yet since they just recently named a Dance Captain I'm not surprised the understudies are under rehearsed. And i agree that rehearsing a scene or two is very different than doing the role. There are so many factors the first time you go on, staging, costumes, mics, etc. And you usually rehearse with other understudies and the stage managers. Congrats to Gerard for doing so well. They have had understudy rehearsals. He just has not rehearsed the Hanschen part as much as the other parts. They are covering all of the boy parts in the show, so that is a lot to rehearse considering neither of them were involved in the off-broadway run.
And I have seen understudies go on with little or no rehearsal before, so I am not saying that this is something that is extraordinary or anything (In rent on Will Chase's first show Matt Caplan forgot they had an extra matinee and they had to put the new understudy on last minute).
you know what...your are right. He is way shorter....he is like maybe 5 foot. Really short! Tiny. He is like the same hight as the smallest girl in the show. Remy. The girl who looks like a little 12 year-old.I believe she is 17. He is just short. Considering the rest of the male cast...I think he is an odd casting choice. I am sure he is super talented, but visually odd. And the visual point is a huge factor in casting. So like I said, I think he is odd casting. Someone said on another post that Robert Hager, who is like 5'9, looked really really young next to Jon B. Wright and the rest of the male cast. So i could imagine how young Gerard must look. You must be mistakened, Rob's roundabout 5'7.5" - 5'8".
Just wanted to toss it out there, seeing as so many ppl are obsessed with 'wrong/odd casting' with SPRING. Thanks for teh support and interest throughout.
Canonico was on as Georg tonight. Although the other "boys" tower over him, he has a mighty voice -- much different than Astin's but powerful and very rich.
In general, you can tell the wear of getting to the opening and then the holiday schedule have left the cast a bit fatigured. I think Groff is nursing the early stages of a head cold. And, the timing was off in a few places, including some minor technical glitches. I hope the company managers help the cast find a steady pace. This has to be one heady, exhausting experience.
With that, I was thrilled to see the orhestra almost completely filled. The demographics seem to be shifting a little and I noticed a significantly more diverse group (i.e., older, couples, tourists, and -- of course -- high school and college students) tonight than were present at the final previews. Keeping fingers crossed that the bump in numbers over the holidays were the start of a general upward trend through the tough January and February selling period. Updated On: 1/3/07 at 11:06 PM
They all better get their asses back in it by Sunday. That's when I'm seeing it and I don't want to see any understudys. The damn show's only been open a month, for Christ's sake!
oh my god stalkers. could we all get a grip please? these people are actors, not your potential mates. sorry. i just saw this thread and i had to comment finally. there are some CREEPY people out here.
gerard can't be 17 years old. according to equity, minors aren't allowed to do anything phallic/sexual onstage, or strip (ie masturbate in the boot camp). Stephan Sater talked about that specifically, that's why Jennifer Damiano isn't understudying Wendla anymore either.
