Steven Pasquale to lead in "Carousel" at the Lyric Opera

Posted: 10/31/14 at 2:17pmFor a while it seemed like Graves was only singing Carmen and Dalila, and then she just sort of disappeared. She hasn't appeared at the Met in a decade. I always think of Nettie as a role for a woman in her dotage, but if Denyce is still in good voice, she could be vocally thrilling.

WOW! Laura Osnes playing Julie Jordan is perfect casting!

Posted: 12/18/14 at 12:58pmI wonder if they're aiming for a Broadway run if Laura is indeed playing Julie. (Also, are there no other sopranos in the world? I love Laura Osnes but it seems like she and Kelli O'Hara currently have a monopoly on every soprano role and there are so many other great ladies who I'd love to see play those parts...Jill Paice, Lauren Worsham, Lisa O'Hare, Elena Shaddow, the list goes on...)

Posted: 12/18/14 at 1:08pmOh my goodness I hope they bring this to Broadway. How amazing would that be? I need Steven to be on Broadway again. Or at least somewhere easier to get to than Chicago. I want to see this so badly but it's not going to happen.

Posted: 12/18/14 at 1:25pmI agree, perfectlymarvelous. I too love Osnes and O'Hara but it seems that they're just blanketing all the "classic" leading lady roles. At least Worsham got to do Magnolia in the NYPhil Show Boat (jealous!). And add Alexandra Silber to your list, she's a favorite of mine! Hehe

I'm very excited about this casting and would love to see it transfer to Broadway. Laura is the quintessential R&H leading lady.
I found a video of Steven Pasquale singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" at this year's Miscast benefit in March. He says that Billy is a role in which he never would be cast. His performance knocks it out of the park.

"He says that Billy is a role in which he never would be cast."
I think he meant he would never be cast as Nettie - the woman who sings that song in the show! Obviously there's no reason why he couldn't play Billy.

Posted: 12/18/14 at 5:07pmOsnes is that rare bird- she sings in a legit style that does not feel operatic or classical. People describe her voice as "Disney Princess," and that's exactly what it is. It's modern but timeless, and other than the fact that her pronunciation is distinctly American and not mid-Atlantic, she sounds like she could be originating roles in the Golden Age or today.

Posted: 12/18/14 at 7:31pmPasquale is a terrific actor, it must be noted. He was scary good in LaBute's "Reasons to be Pretty," and then he was remarkable as Frank Whittaker in "Far From Heaven," a performance that could've won him a supporting actor Tony on B'way. I thought his reading of that difficult role matched the wonderful work of Quaid in the film, and they deepened the character in act two (I know, the show didn't quite come together, though I'd love to see another staging). And they gave him a complex, heartbreaking final solo, which Pasquale nailed. He is among the best leading men we have in the theater.

Posted: 12/18/14 at 7:40pmLaura Osnes is going to really do her songs justice...I am so in love with her voice...and Pasquale is tailor made for Billy...so wish a recording could be made of this.

Posted: 12/18/14 at 7:51pmLive two hours out of Chicago.. SO excited for some big New York names to come perform this! I thought I was excited when I heard Pasquale was doing it, but now I'm even more excited that Osnes will be in it as well. Just bought my tickets!

This has gotta come to Broadway, right?
I need a cast recording featuring Steven and Laura!

Posted: 12/18/14 at 9:25pmRob Ashford has no right to come within 30 miles of Carousel. Pasquale is going to sing and act the sh*t out of that role. I personally find Osnes more suited for Carrie, but she will sound lovely singing this score.

"Finding a place for shirtlessness might be a little difficult for THE SOUND OF MUSIC, topless Nuns?"
Not shirtless, but did you forget the scene where Captain Von Trapp comes naked out of the shower revealing his gigantic "manhood" scaring the hell out of Maria? Then she is unable to look the Captain in the eye and in a dream sequence is surrounded by nuns singing "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria's?" All is made well when the Mother Abbess teaches Maria she must face such "big" obstacles and that she must "Climb Every Mountain".

Rob Ashford, huh?
I look forward to the ridiculously over-athletic Michael-Kidd-on-crack men's choreography for the added backup dancers in "Soliloquy" representing Billy and his boy Bill and all the other fathers and sons of the whaling town.

Posted: 2/11/15 at 2:33pmI love Steven Pasquale so much. I saw him in 'Bridges' and he was in the audience at Whitney Bashor's show at 54 Below. Imagine if Steven and Whitney reunited for 'Carousel.' I would be in Heaven...
