Can you go into more detail about how the plexi-glass thing is gonig to work? I'm GREATLY intrigued in how the set will be constructed, etc., etc. I am expecting oober-amazing effects, but I'm curious as to how they'll work...
Any insight would be appreciated 'cause I don't really understand the whole concept(s) behind it.
Best,
- Mike

Another thought. Thomas Schumacher headed the re-vamping of BEAUTY which, in my opinion, took it a step closer to real theatre. He was NOT involved in the original production.
Perhaps he'll take what he's learned from TARZAN and POPPINS and guide MERMAID accordingly?

ljay,
I think Beauty and the Beast not winning many Tony Awards was due also to the fact that it was a bunch of "outsider theme park talent" coming to beloved Broadway for "Evil Corporate Disney's" very first show. In fact, the only person to win the Tony was the costume designer -- perhaps the only real Broadway veteran of the creative team.

Posted: 7/10/07 at 6:31pmThe downsized Beauty had a REALLY cheapened physical production. How is that 'real theatre'??

I was referring to the performances. I saw the original tour (original concept) and the tour (cheaper concept) and felt that the second one was a more mature interpretation of the script. Later I read that that was one thing the producers had done in the re-do.

Posted: 7/11/07 at 11:15pmWhen B&B opened everyone seemed to hate it. If anyone has a copy of the Broadway Fake Book, the show description about B&B is VERY negative, saying something like "times have certainly changed. Musicals used to become movies, now the opposite seems to be true" or something along those lines.

#36re: THE LITTLE MERMAID Write-Up
Posted: 7/11/07 at 11:44pmI'm anxious to see how the costumes will turn out. Especially Ursula's with the Lion King-esque mask/headpiece treatment.

It just semms to me, they are concentrating way too much on the physical and why do they think an Opera director is the right person to direct a Children's Musical?
Oh right, kids love THE RING.
#38re: THE LITTLE MERMAID Write-Up
Posted: 7/11/07 at 11:59pmBecause they've learned that their shows need as much sophistication as possible.....that's what Julie Taymor (who also directs a lot of opera) brought to the Lion King.

Posted: 7/12/07 at 12:34amBut...Bob Crowley had NO experience with directing before Tarzan, Both Julie and Francesca Zambello have been acclaimed Opera directors before tackling a Broadway show; they know what they want to do with the shows and they know that the production can't just be a theme park show...

how does something being over-budget mean it's going to be bad???
and p.s. tons ofl b'way shows go overbudget.

I am just skeptical because once again as in TARZAN so much is being made of the physical production and less of the story and heart.
I loved Doug Wright's I AM MY OWN WIFE but I also loved HWANG'S M BUTTERFLY, so it makes me nervous as to what the book will sacrifice for the TALL SET.
And going over budget doesn't mean the show will be bad, just Bad planning and an indication of trouble ahead.
But sometimes problems mean great Drama.
I am anxious also to hear the dirt from Denver.

The Little Mermaid is a very different story from Tarzan though. Tarzan's story is a bit nebulous and the way they did it in the theater made it even more so. The Little Mermaid is more focused--there's a mermaid, she's in love with a guy, she does what she must to get him with a few obstacles along the way, she wins the guy in the end.
What makes the movie is all the stuff they put on it--the singing fish, pretty songs, fabulous set pieces... is anybody really that concerned about capturing Ariel's psyche appropriately on stage? I begrudge it a bit but I think Disney could make a massive misstep and this would still run for half a decade.

Posted: 7/12/07 at 2:38pmI have to say, I am very excited to see this...Even if the sets seem to be the focus, they've got some great talent in their cast (aka Sherie Rene Scott).
