THE PARISIAN WOMAN Reviews

Pam MacKinnon hasn't really been picking the best projects lately, huh?

Yeah, it seems that every project she's had since Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? hasn't been as well liked.

Maybe she's just not that strong of a director?

THE PARISIAN WOMAN Reviews

This show had its world premiere at South Coast Rep n 2013. Pam MacKinnon directed that as well and it starred Dana Delany. It got very good reviews and Dana's seductive sexiness was perfectly suited to the role. I don't know what the hell they've done to it since then as I haven't seen it, but it sounds like they're desperately trying to be topical which does not appear to have served them well. And I said it when the casting was announced and I'll say it again. I love Uma but I think she is completely miscast in this. I don't know if Dana was interested in reprising her role but I don't think they considered her cause they wanted a "higher wattage star". Well, they got one. Hope they're happy.

I have been reading Chris Jones since 2005, and I think that is probably the meanest review he has ever written. Even when he hates something, he is generally respectful. This show must have really rubbed him the wrong way.

I'm sure it doesn't help that Beau Willomon's obviously complicity in the Kevin Spacey thing doesn't help either in regards to the way critics have reacted to this play.

That Chicago Tribune review has a big spoiler in it.

In the opening night recap, it was disheartening to see Uma so visibly shaken by the reviews.

If the production is in Chicago, he'll praise it even when admitting it's not a great show and the performers aren't the best, but he'll give an A for effort! It's refreshing to see him be blunt about something for a change, even if it's not in Chicago (or perhaps, because it's not in Chicago).

Yeah, he's booster-in-chief for anything in Chicago that he thinks has even a halfway decent chance of moving to New York. But that's not uncommon in regional theater criticism these days. Peter Marks does the exact same thing in DC (remember Glory Days, lol?).

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

I just watched the BWW interviews at the opening night after party. Not saying the scathing reviews are unwarranted (I haven’t seen the play), but it was truly sad to watch Uma’s interview.

It sounds like from the reviews that Uma Thurman wasn’t really the main problem people had, but rather the writing of the show itself. We’ve all seen shows that get pretty good reviews elsewhere transfer to Broadway and the critics here aren’t nearly as impressed or in fact they are downright negative about a show that was better received elsewhere. Plus, 2013 was a different time from 2017 and maybe four years later the whole House of Cards style political intrigue is simply boring and cliche to viewers now.
