Weird; I have no idea how that happened. That's my last name. Must've gotten changed when I edited my profile photo.

I just got back from a trip to NYC and after catching up on all the latest openings I can honestly say that this show was my favourite. Is it perfect? No. Do I wish some of the lyrics were better, etc? Of course. But if you look at the evening from start to finish, it is a very entertaining evening. Sure, everyone can nit-pick - this isn't a show for intellectuals, sorry.

The message is great, the talent on stage is great, the songs are fun, the book is hilarious and everyone is having a blast doing what they do, and that shows.

My one quibble is that there is no chemistry between the two girls - Emma and Alyssa. I mean, zero. But that won't impact your night......if you love musicals, you should definitely not miss this.

I never even thought about their chemistry, but that's a pretty good point.

I was honestly so memorized by the Choreography whenever the kids took the stage that I could forgive a couple other things.

I dont think Ive seen a show opening number that was that bad in a long time..

I honestly didnt think it was that funny until act two. A lot of the jokes in act one fell very flat for me but Act 2 had some pretty good ones.

Also the actress who played Alyssa's mom was great because he really made me hate her.

I saw both shows and while I liked HOH I loved The Prom. Both are cheesy and both are fun shows. The Prom had a better story IMO .

Haven't seen the show yet, but I've been listening to the album and I actually really love Changing Lives and it's reprise. What about it do you not like?

I have to say I agree with Yvan. I tried to listen to the cast recording today and had stop part way through Track 1 - Changing Lives. I’m sure the show adds context, but I just thought it was bad from the lyrics to everything else. To give a more nuanced review would require reattempting to listen to it and I just don’t want to. It basically squandered any goodwill it earned from  me from the Macy’s Parade performance. It had a slight chance of filling my one unfilled Friday night slot of my Jan. 4-7, 2019 trip. But now I don’t see that happening. Now it’ll likely either be seeing Kinky Boots or DEH for the second time (first time for my friend) or Choir Boy.

While I HIGHLY recommend Choir Boy, I’d definitely see The Prom over seeing something else for the second time.

I saw The Prom last evening and while it certainly won’t be winning any artistic brilliance awards, I haven’t laughed like that or felt so much on cloud nine after a show in a very very long time.  It’s silly, ridiculous, over the top, and hammy but so lovable and winning.  The message, of course, is also quite beautiful, even if a little heavy-handed at times.  I don’t think I’d listen to any of the songs  out of context on the recording.  You lose so much, which is why I think you may be having that reaction to it

I do know that it can be difficult to appreciate a OBCR of a show before seeing it. The OBCR for Hamilton (my favorite show) didnt engage me until after the show. I remember walking through the West Village with the OBCR blasting in my headphones the morning after seeing it and I couldnt believe how awesome it was. Having said that, Ive learned to start trusting my instincts before seeing a show (by time I saw Hamilton, I was desperate to see it even if the music hadnt engaged me yet). Looking back, when I convince myself to see a show despite my reservations I inevitably end up disappointed. And I always go into a show with an open mind. After all, I want to enjoy myself and get my moneys worth.

All that being said, this will be my friends first introduction to Broadway theater and I want it to be a good one. I just dont think The Prom is where I want to start her off at.

Well, I think the other thing to consider when programming a show marathon is making sure you prevent showbleed. I saw Waverly Gallery as my matinee and The Prom as my evening, so they would be so different (play/musical; drama/comedy) that I could mentally cordon them off to unpack them later. So, if you're going musical/musical, a more "serious" musical would be a better pairing with the Prom, or Kinky Boots or whatever. Two fun, feel-good musicals will leave less as far as individual impressions, especially for a newbie on sensory overload.

She’s only seeing two shows with me (I’m seeing five shows plus 54 Below). We’re seeing likely one of the above listed Friday night (Also secretly entering the Hamilton lottery for us but we all know how that’s going to go down. LOL) then for sure American Son on Saturday (her main reason for coming into the city). The four shows in the running were what she expressed interest in from a longer list I have her (bye, bye The Ferryman sad).

So, the list looks like this:

Friday Night Show (TBD) (with my friend)

Saturday matinee/evening (order depending on rush/TKTS availability):

American Son (with my friend)

The Waverly Gallery (solo)

Sunday:

Matinee: Torch Song (final performance, ticket already purchased, solo)

Evening: The Lifespan of a Fact (solo)

9:30 - 54 Below - Be More Swing! (Performances by three members of Be More Chill cast) (solo)

I found their chemistry to be great in the few scenes they actually have together which is probably like 5 minutes.

I'm planning a trip and am interested in more shows than I have open slots for.

If anyone has seen both The Prom and Everybody's Talking About Jamie (live or in cinema), which did you like better?

Also, The Prom vs. Be More Chill?

The Prom, on both counts.

I finally saw this over the weekend and had a good time. It's a solid B-level show, in my book, on par with previous stuff the creatives have put out like The Wedding Singer or Drowsy Chaperone. They are fortunate to have the cast they do, which covers a lot of the material's weakness.

I found the show to struggle with its tone. It simply treats its showbiz side much differently than its Indiana side- the New Yorkers are flamboyant sendup Characters with a capital C, while the Hoosiers... aren't, and are handled more or less with dignity and realism, to the point that they barely register against the lovable scenery chewers.  It doesn't help that the New Yorkers are aggressive characters with an exceedingly clear goal, while Emma is pretty passive for most of the show and her wants are less well-defined.

Whenever Beth and Brooks are onstage, the show is on fire. Sieber is saddled with the show's weakest concepts (that Godspell stuff just falls flat, and his second-act gospel number is too heavy-handed in a show that is generally very light). Angie Schworer is fantastic in a very thin and poorly-defined role (why is she even going along with this plan? why is she there at all?) and absolutely kills her one number.

"Tonight Belongs to You" is irrepressibly catchy and was the standout number in the show for me.

"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."

I value your opinion, so just to be clear, you've seen Jamie and Be More Chill? If so, what do you feel are the issues with those shows that are not present (or present to a lesser degree) in The Prom?

I have seen both and I think The Prom is just a far better example of a show set in a high school over BMC or ETAJ. I think the show tackles some real social issues (as does Jaime) but at the end of the day it is a story about acceptance, and it is done fairly well. The dancing is also fantastic.

I saw Everybody's Talking About Jamie in cinemas, and then The Prom live (well, not like there's a cinematic version of the later wink)

Jamie had some really great performances (which IMO carried the show), but of the two I prefer The Prom. The music is better, and while Jamie had some funny moments, my sides hurt from laughing so hard during The Prom.

Haven't seen Be More Chill.

There are a few videos online of when the show was in tryouts/development in ATL, Emma's girlfriend was a blonde girl at that time.  Perhaps that's what you saw?
