Both of them can be considered as leads. Each has their own story. Anyway I saw the show last night (sold out too!) and Kate Mariley was amazing! I mean wow! Kudos to her and I hope Beth gets better soon. As for the show itself, overall I liked it. I first saw Brooks in sunday in the park last year which didn’t have a meaty role but I’m glad to see him shine here! The dancing and choreography was overall great and I agree with others that this was better than Mean Girls overall.
I was at the matinee today, and it was fantastic. Truly a special show. I was also backstage after and here's what happened with the whole Kate/Beth situation according to Josh Lamon:
Right as Saturday's matinee was ready to get going, Beth became incredibly ill (and still is, apparently) and ran offstage before the curtain came up. The show was held, and Kate was thrown into the role last minute, having had no rehearsals and not having been fitted for costumes yet. So, as said above, she did the show on the fly with exactly two costumes. There was then an emergency trip to Macy's between the matinee and evening to costume Kate for the rest of the weekend. She gave a phenomenal performance today, with several outfits at the ready!
All the reviews I saw were positive or mixed-to-positive except one. The concept for this show leaves lots of room for outrageous humor and, given who the cast members are, I'm sure there are plenty of laughs. Just the basic premise sounds funny so I'm hoping 'The Prom' is a success.
I don't give a country hoot if this show isn't a genre-changing masterpiece! I could also care less about what the "critics" have to say - opinions are like, as they say......well, you KNOW what they say! LOL!!! It's been a long, LONG time since I've become farklempt out of pure joy, and that is exactly what "The Prom" did to me. Brooks Ashmanskas was a total, hysterical delight! Beth Leavel, and the rest of the cast, was a joy. It's a SOLID "feel-good" show, and with the way the world is today, "feel-good" is worth a LOT!!!!!
The Prom is bizarre because it has so many brilliant and fun highlights, but also made me roll my eyes a LOT in the second act for being so cliche. I definitely had a great time, but by the end the themes were so hammered into my head I was ready to leave. It didn’t reach quite the heights I was hoping it would, for me. And I didn’t love most of the songs. But the ones I did like, I LOVED.
I think two understudies and being a Tuesday sucked a bit of the energy out of it. Honestly, I think i’d go again if it opportunity popped up.
I wish the music and lyrics were better, but the show has a lot of heart and is often very funny. All four leads are great, but Beth was a force of nature last night.
I’m assuming word of mouth and good reviews may already be helping this show. I arrived at the theatre for 10.15 and the box office had at least 30 people looking for rush tickets. I managed to get the last two rush tickets for the matinee. I’m hoping the box office will continue to build.

Agreed. My TDF ticket was in the balcony. Usually they’ll give you orchestra if they have the seats. Luckily this theater is small enough that even the balcony isn’t that far.

I understand the sentiment but let’s be realistic here. A show cannot survive on rush ticket sales, and I’m sure most shows had lines of 30 people today. If all those people were buying $150 full price tickets, that’s a different story. But you’re only setting yourself up for disappointment by perpetuating an idea the show is selling well because it had a normal rush line.

When did I insist the show is selling well? The entire point of my post was that there was a decent crowd of people buying rush tickets and it’s evident interest in the show has grown. I know exactly how this show business works. Attending the show today it was more certainly the most full I’ve seen it so I’m hopeful the shows box office continues to grow.

Would you say that the songs in this trailer are representative of the entire score (I think they're catchy), or are they highlights and the rest is weaker?

I like those songs, but I don't think they're highlights. I enjoyed other songs much more, specifically the solo numbers.
Go see this. Its cheesy, cute, boisterous, topical, heart-tugging and everything else that makes a fantastic musical comedy.
It can be a little too self-referential and insider-y at times, but this is a show with ALOTTA heart and ALOTTA sequins. This is good old-fashioned fun and I honestly think it would be a disservice to miss it

Also, last night, toward the ending, when Barry is trying to convince Dee Dee to toss her credit card in to pay for the finale Prom, someone from the audience shouted DO IT GIRL!, prompting Brooks, Beth, and the others to freeze and keep from breaking into laughter as the audience cheered.
When it died down, Brooks turned to Beth and calmly said What I was going to say was...Do it, Girl. and the audience absolutely lost it with applause.

Just booked front mezz tix for Jan. Looking forward to it, hoping I won't be disappointed as I was at HOH. (After being convinced by comments here.)
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
I saw this tonight. While I thought the story was cute, I hated the majority of the music. You happened, Time to dance, and Unruly Heart are the only good songs IMO.
I will be very VERY surprised if it doesn't win Best choreography.
