I Will see For Colored Girls on Sunday, the only featured contender really worthy out of the shows Ive seen is Day in “Drive”. Also, if we are not counting Beans

From what I've seen at this point in the season (which is not everything), I would nominate Uzo Aduba and Phylicia Rashad, with Uzo being a deserved winner.

Beyond that, the category is pretty weak.Is there a standout in for colored girls? Johanna Day in HILTD or someone in Macbeth? Perhaps POTUS will have a Featured contender or two in that cast of hams who could even coast to a win? Pre-pandemic, Sally Murphy was the closest thing to a female standout inThe Minutes(and that seems like a stretch). Am I missing anything egregious? ((I have not seen SKIN yet))
"

From what I've gathered of the shows that opened so far this season, Jessica Frances Dukes (Trouble in Mind) and Kara Young (Clyde's) also appear to be possible nominees.

Let's not forget La Chanze in Trouble in Mind.  As the protagonist, she sang a bit, diegetically, but it's far from a musical theatre performance (just to remind some posters). It was gorgeous work, in every way deserving of a nomination.

But LaChanze is gonna be competing as lead for Trouble in Mind.

This tangent seems better-suited for one of the Tony threads, but since we're already talking about it here: who's worthy or not will obviously vary subjectively from person to person. But so far, I would say that the Featured Actress in a Play category is shaping up to have a strong set of nominees, but no obvious frontrunner to win. Kara Young, Jessica Frances Dukes, and Johanna Day are currently my 3 favorites.

Phylicia Rashad seems like a good pick on paper, since it's a very meaty role that went featured, and she's the "star" of that production. But unclear how/whether the Cosby incident will impact her chances.

Then if Beans go featured, she could get it, maybe along with Uzo Aduba? Or one of the POTUS or For Colored Girls ensemble members.

At this point, it could shake out a lot of different ways. It may not be the most extraordinary category of the year, but I predict there won't be a bad nominee in the bunch.

You're right. I still can't believe any Sabina anywhere in any production would be "supporting." It's the role played by Tallulah Bankhead and Elizabeth Ashley on Broadway. It's central to Wilder's conceit -- the opening and closing -- I've never heard a discussion that treated the part as an ensemble player. To me, a bizarre accommodation, and I cannot imagine the Tony Committee's decision thus. But I've had questions about billing and casting for years.

I saw this afternoon's performance, and I'd say that 98 percent is just as Wilder wrote it. The only significant differences I noted are along the lines of a quote from bell hooks replacing one from Plato. There are also brief updated contemporary references, like to popular plays - Vanya and Sonya instead of Peg o' My Heart, etc. And the last act is done in Civil War costuming, which is probably not what a person would usually expect.

Anyway, regarding the awards discussion above - I didn't even think the performances were good in the first two acts, let alone award-worthy. Almost everyone has been obviously directed to play broadly and cartoonishly so that, for me, there was almost no compelling drama and few laughs. I kept thinking, this is the Wilder play where they should have brought in David Cromer -- it could be wonderful in the hands of someone who values subtlety and realism.

And then, in the third act, it was like my wish came true - the tone was totally different, subdued and natural. They still missed some of the laughs but did really well with the drama. Also, throughout the show, the set design, very large puppets, and other visual aspects were first-rate.

What is the timing for the pause and intermission please? I know it is written as a three act play. Thanks.

This production is BANANAS! I looooooooooved!

This is the play everyone should be talking about. Lileana Blain-Cruz played no games. A feast for the eyes! It’s perfect! Changes and all!

I’m watching old productions now and they don’t hold a flame. This mess is complete FIRE!

Beans is getting an actress Tony nom and may just win. Blain-Cruz will get one of director, and may just win too!

But all around great work. The play is ABSURD. What I love about it is that Blain-Cruz fully embraced that and made the crazy even bigger! But it’s still done so damn tastefully. Ugh!

MJ is the best musical up now. This is the best play running. Trust me.

I was gonna say that last night in... less kind terms, but I'm glad someone did.

Anyways, I'm still glad you liked the show and I'm super excited to see it soon!

lol

Not to get too far off topic, but what do you all not like about MJ? You can have personal feelings about the subject of the show, but I find it very hard to argue how fastastic of a production it is. There’s no musical better this season, and the only thing currently playing that gives it a run for its money is Hadestown.

And mark my words:  Myles will win best actor in a musical. His performance is transcendent by every definition of the word. If you disagree, please name a better show/performance. I’m curious.

But anyway, has anyone else seen “Skin or Our Teeth”? I really want to know others’ thoughts. I can’t believe the buzz isn’t picking up for this. I hope the reviews are moving enough to get butts in seats over there…

This is very off-topic here.

I really liked the production when I saw days ago, didnt know anything about, so It was great to be surprised. I highly recommend the show, got a LincTix ticket btw.

And I stand By that Beans deserves a nom and the Actor playing Henry too. Also noms for Set and Direction must happen, right?

Act 2 was INCREDIBLE! When the actors were gliding down the slide... OMG! That act has never been done better! I would bet my life on it!

I would throw costumes in there too! They were perfect!

Oh maybe you haven't noticed, but Sutton has been reviewing the show (sight unseen) since well before the first preview. LOL Consistency is not one of its attributes.

Saw it last Sunday, and I loved it.

I had seen it a few years ago at TFANA, and Branden Jacob-Jenkins additional material helped to bolster the play into the reality of today, without being distracting from the original text.

As others have mentioned the physical production is stunning and Bean is making star turn here.

Sorry Folks, this one was a solid miss for me.  Clearly all Pulitzer Prize wins are not created equal. Of the past Pulitzer play revivals  this season, HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE fares the best with possibly the best production this play has ever seen.  TAKE ME OUT is a close runner up with its elevated language and solid performers, the direction was not as taught as the original and the over all production just left me pleased instead of in awe as I was the first time around.  Then came THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH.  3 hours of my life I will never get back.  I realize my reaction is a bit strong, but boy oh boy did ever find this thing a hot mess. If any of those performances make it into a Tony nomination I would be utterly shocked.  Sitting through this made me want to see FLYING OVER SUNSET again, that how much I disliked this.  For a play with so much to say, it ultimately says nothing at all and imo was an exercise in nonsense.

Take Me Out lost the Pulitzer to Anna in the Tropics.

Yes. That's how plays work. In fact. That's how time works. Have you ever seen a play and at the end you got your time back?

Oh my!  I won't see this revival until next week, but that closing line is one Wilder himself might have killed for.  Thank you.
