I know this is quite random but I have always adored this clip from Grand Hotel's tony performance.
Michael Jeter was absolutely brilliant.
One of the best tony performances of all time.
I don't care if you have seen it before. Watch it, love it, cherish it, replay it.
Grand Hotel Tony
Ironically I have already watched that clip 4 or 5 times today.... must be something in the air!
"If we don't live happily ever after at least we survive until the end of the week!" -Kermit the frog "I need the money... it costs a lot to look this cheap!" -Dolly P. "Oh please, Over at 'Gypsy' Patti LuPone hasn't even alienated her first daughter yet!" Mary Testa in "Xanadu" "...Like a drunk Chita Rivera!" Robin de Jesus in "In the Heights"
"B*tch, I don't know your life." -Xanadu After that if he still doesn't understand why you were uncomfortable and are now infuriated, kick him again but this time with Jazz Hands!!! -KillerTofuOne of the best Tony performances ever.

I just realized this was also posted in the Grand Hotel thread along with Jeter's brilliant tony speech. There really must be something in air. That clip combined with Barret's stunning voice, and Jeter's phenomenal dancing is Legendary. Jeter really left us too soon.
Truely. His acceptance speech moves me to tears.
I just showed this clip and his acceptance speech to one of my students and she said it was her new favorite.

Such a great clip to watch repeatedly and not get sick of!

That still ranks as the only time I have seen a standing ovation during the middle of a song in any show. It was all because of Jeter's performance. It was truly exhilarating.
Michael Jeter was an incredible life force, as was David Carroll, who originated the part Brent Barrett took over.
Tragically, we lost both David Carroll and Michael Jeter during those horrific years when AIDS killed so many talented theater people.
Michael Jeter's Tony performance is like a beacon into his enormous talent. I wish there were more of David Carroll's performances left for people to see. He had a glorious voice.
Listen to his voice--and that ovation!

PJ-
Jeter wasn't lost during the height of the AIDS crisis, he lived until 2003, and can still be seen on Sesame Street.

Agreed, huskcharmer, I was just posting a message to that effect. David Carroll died 11 years before Jeter, in 1992.

And, Jeter died of a massive seizure, not HIV/AIDS.
You're right. I should have been more precise. He didn't die of AIDS; he lived with it.
But he was so forthright about living with his HIV that I've seen him in my mind, many times, singing that song with David, both celebrating life while we have it.

Jeter's performance and subsequent speech have to be on anyone's very short list of the greatest Tony moments.
Researching all this just a bit, I'd forgotten the almost unbelievably tragic circumstances of David Carroll's passing: He died in the bathroom of the recording studio just as he was beginning work on the long-delayed cast album of Grand Hotel.

From the moment Michael Jeter came through the Grand Hotel revolving door and gave a little smile, the audience adored him. I know I did.
His Tony acceptance speech was touchingly beautiful. What a brave moment.
I always watch this clip! Jeter was an amazing performer and his speech is always a great tony moment that should be remembered forever. What a joy to watch this.
The smile he gives upon his entrance is so perfect.... awkward and sweet.
