Posted: 5/15/08 at 10:51pmDiana Degarmo was a runner-up on American Idol... but at least she has charisma and talent. She was GREAT as Penny in HAIRSPRAY. And Fantasia garnered a lot of high praise for her work in TCP.

You know, I hate to say this, but I have a feeling this will actually work. (Ticket-wise, that is.)
American Idol is a very popular tv show, and there are going to be a lot of tourists without tickets looking to see a show who will choose Grease because they want to see Taylor Hicks live.
It's terrible casting and a little bit strange (considering stage time), but it will probably help ticket sales (Not that they need help.)

And that is it in a nutshell. And thanks for saying "successful" and not "talented." Because it's all about the belief here that AI contestants somehow "cheated" to get to Broadway.
This is nothing new. As each gutsy AI contestant finds their way to Broadway, each one gets the same treatment no matter how great a job they do. Diana gets occasional props for hangin’ in there the longest. LOL Folks here are all wannabeIdinas, have likely ALL tried out numerous times themselves for Idol and been rejected, or are just not smart or risky enough to take the big leap in that direction.
For chrissakes people! It’s the biggest show on TV and the biggest audition opportunity that exists! And, it’s a natural fit. There is nothing cheesier than the Broadway musical. Patriot music may carry more cool cachet! At least the producers get it.
I respect the Idol contestants. They are just like all other performers looking for a break. They are smart enough to actually go out and risk it all. You don’t get a job if nobody notices you. There are tons of great performers walking around New York not getting the notice they deserve. The Idol contestants are just the ones who’ve figured out how to leapfrog over everybody else into the limelight. Which is where every, single, last performer wants desperately to be!
Don’t let them bull**** anybody. It pains them to see people just like them NOT have to drive cabs, wait tables or do a variety of non-entertainment related day jobs while pounding the daily pavement facing rejection after rejection. It makes them bitter.

He's 32 years old. He has a gold record. He has money in the bank. He's had meaningful gigs in his life. Apparently, he's a hard worker, a decent singer and, according to the photograph on this thread, he has experienced the touch of another human being.
That pretty well puts him miles ahead of some of the people on this thread who are ****ting all over him.
Oh yeah, and he's about to appear ON Broadway, not blog about it from their parents' basement.
Why is it always the same avatars when the **** is being flung?

well in the last revival everone and their mothe played teen angel (including Billy Porter.Chubby Checker, Mary Bond Davis, Jennifer Holliday, Al Jarreau and Darlene Love) you car really do no wrong with this role. Give him a chance

I don't understand how people can be so upset about this... Has anyone seen Max Crumm?? And he opened the show.
And let's not lose sight of the fact that the whole production seems to have been born of the reality-show tie-in.
The bar for the production was set pretty low from the start, I don't see why this should be shocking people. It actually seems pretty par for the course.
