I enjoy this version, as a guilty pleasure. The arrangements are just wrong enough to be fun.
As a side note:
One comment told me by an insider on this production was that it never fully worked with Allen, because Charity needs to be a push-over and "Debbie isn't so much a push-over as a bull dozer."
Ken Mandlebaum offers a lot of information regarding the 1986 recording of Sweet Charity.

I loved Anne Reinking! She is/was such a superb dancer. She also has that voice that more than hints at Gwen's shaky vulnerability. I can remember being blown away by her dancing in "I'm A Brass Band."

Of the Charitys that I have seen (Christina, Charlotte, Debbie, Ann), Ann was the best.

Chita33--is that the one with Simone Kleinsma? I actually have it, too... As well as her solo CD...

Yes. I enjoyed it very much. How is her solo cd? Can I still buy it or has it been pulled from ciculation?

If it makes you feel any better, I did a buy it now for the 1986 cd on ebay a few years ago for $37...
When I first listened to it I thought it had a pretty cheesy 80s sound to it, but it eventually grew on me. It does not sound like a full orchestra, though, I'd have to agree with that. But I really enjoy Bebe, particularly on Something Better Than This. And I much prefer the arrangements for Sweet Charity and Rhythm of Life on this cd as compared to the new revival. Michael Rupert sounds terrific (although I swear I can hear him take a breath at one point as if he almost came in too early), and the choral work on Rhythm sounds great. I really don't like the version of Sweet Charity in the new show.
I look forward to the re-release of the 1986 cd, hopefully with better packaging and liner notes! (And I hold out faint hope that they'll give Charlotte a bonus track on the new cast recording...)

I would love them to give Charlotte a bonus track.
the orchestra does sound fake on this album...and what is with that horrendous arrangement of "Where Am I Going?" The recording is more of a novelty than anything I think.

Guys - I'm getting sick again. Now on Ebay there are two new Charity 86 Revival CDs for much cheaper than what I payed - I really hope people bid them up.
I guess it would be best for me to stop checking ebay for this CD.

Ok. Ebay rule for no buyers remorse, #1 do not go back and check similar items to see if you could have gotten a better deal. But if you do...
#2-It ain't over till it's over. Both those bids you mentioned are 3-4 days from finishing and you can be sure those Sweet Charity cds are not gonna be less than $20.00. Plus , one of them is from Germany and S&H is $6.50!
For $39.00 you got an ok deal. Not great...but you weren't fleeced. Remember I paid $102.50 for the Holland Sweet Charity. I promise you will love your Debbie Allen Sweet Charity CD.

In the 1986 revival, didn't they cut "Charity's Soliloquy"? Either that or "You Should See Yourself". But I'm pretty sure they cut "Charity's Soliloquy".

"Charity's Soliloquy" was dropped from the original Broadway production shortly after opening, and didn't appear in any of the major revivals, until the current production.

"You should see yourself" is in the recording of the 1986 revival.

Well I got it.
I really enjoy it.
I can't believe some of you don't think Debbie is a good singer. The woman can frickin sinnng. I love her numbers. Some songs are wayy more synthesized than others, and it gets a little annoying.
I lovvve the funky "...Bravest Individual" - its great. The movie version of the title song sounds excellent here. It's nice to hear Bebe in her breakout role. The pop version of "Where Am I Going?" is a little odd - but i love how it starts - and Debbie sounds fab.
Overall - I'm def. enjoyin this recording. Could've been better - but it's not bad at all.

When I was a babysitter for this kid, his dad owned the recording, and let me barrow it for a while. It's between ok and icky. I recently bought the original cast and loved it.

I love this recording. Debbie is a great Charity on the disc and onstage.
