re: The ACTUAL Ragtime poster art...

I love all the stuff "shooting" out of lady liberty's head, and I think it's a very "modern" poster design, but I hate the actual text/font choice and coloring. I wish it were all just once color instead of highlighting the "rag" and "time." That just looks cheap.

I hate it!! I really don't see the point of the hot dog or the badge with HOPE written on it... It's the turning of the century, it's not how the country has changed since the beginning of the 20th century. Eww, awful, overloaded... remember the simple and nice shadows? That was an effective poster. And I don't want them to repeat it, but to be as creative as this musical deserves. Totally dissapointed.

re: The ACTUAL Ragtime poster art...

It's way over-designed.

Too many thoughts going on at once and not fitting together. I can just hear people saying, "I hope the show isn't like that."

EDIT: And all that "stuff coming out of her head" kinda reminds me of the facade for the "It's A Small World" ride at Disneyland.

I actually like it. Plus, the crazy random objects kind of describes what the musical's like-- all kinds of totally random characters somehow forming a cohesive whole.

... except this doesn't form a cohesive whole. At least not to me.

re: The ACTUAL Ragtime poster art...

I actually like it. I definitely prefer this over whatever the hell that was with Coalhouse in the front with the piano. This new poster, I believe, is more relevant to the actual show.

Now, I'm not an illustrator, so I can't really think up of a good critique design-wise, but overall, I like it. =)

I actually thought of the ending of Under the Sea from The Little Mermaid.

"All you have to do is have seen any production of Ragtime, read the book, or listened to the recording to get every reference on that poster. I don't think it's specific to the production. It's specific to the text."

Well for instance, I know that they stylized some aspects of the design of this show. Coalhouse's piano is just a skeletal shell in art nouveau style. That's what I meant in how the visual design of the poster relates to the design of this production.

re: The ACTUAL Ragtime poster art...

Why do I feel like Ragtime takes place in New Orleans when I see that poster (even with the Statue of Liberty). I still feel that this was the best Ragtime artwork.

Haha. I never knew there was so much interest in poster art!

Nor did I know marketers could miss by so much.

I can tell by the critiques that a lot of the posters on this board don't know much about art... :/

"It was the music
Of something beginning,
An era exploding,
A century spinning
In riches and rags,
And in rhythm and rhyme.
The people called it Ragtime..."

I like it. I saw it and immediately thought of that verse.

re: The ACTUAL Ragtime poster art...

I feel like they might've been inspired by that amazing "389 years ago" poster: http://www.boingboing.net/2009/01/23/poster-389-years-lat.html

But it still misses the mark. It's almost Python-esque on top, and way too '70s at the bottom.

I'm also cynical as to how this will be compartmentalized and reduced for letterhead/baseball caps/etc. I mean, I guess they'll just use the type and/or Coalhouse, but still.

Everytime I see that little piano player on top of the title I want to sing "RAAAAGTIME! I'm gonna live forever!"

re: The ACTUAL Ragtime poster art...

^Funny story, when I was little, the nJPAC, which my parents were subscribed to had Fame and Ragtime in the same season, and the two pictures were of Carmen dancing on the lunch table and Coalhouse sitting by the piano with everyone surrounding him. They didn't have titles next to them so until I saw Fame (the first show we saw) I thought it would be about people sitting around a piano singing songs and becoming famous. Tuirns out it wasn't what Ragtime was about either.

It reminds me of a Jimmi Hendrix poster, do I need to say more?
