This is going to sound ridiculous, because I have ALWAYS loved Carol Channing. BUT.
How could an award (certainly in NYC) be named after Carol Channing, when there is none named after Lansbury, Merman, Martin or (maybe) Gwen Verdon, just to name female musical comedy stars that are IMO more deserving. Carol Channing was a great personality who had one huge hit (Dolly) and one additional hit Gentlemen).
She had several other shows that we all can list, but they were not in the same league as the shows represented by those ladies. Hell, most of them were flops and / or very modest in scale. IMO Channing will remain a legend for Dolly; they will remain legends because of their large portfolio of roles in a number of classics.
I guess they could give it occasionally to the person leaving a long run (specifically, his / her long run) who has played the role at least at least 1,000 on Broadway and never missed a performance. Call it the Carol Channing Trooper Award. I am NOT BEING SNARKY. That was a serious part of her mojo. As I recall, she only missed one performance ever, because she was talked into taking some medicine and slept through the performance; clearly, she just didn't feel like going on, which seems be the case these days.
If not an entire theater, then perhaps naming part of a theater for Carol. I'm not familiar with the St James, but if that is where she frequently performed "Dolly," then what about "The Carol Channing Stage" or "The Carol Channing Balcony" or my favorite, and with a nod to "Dolly" .... "The Carol Channing Stairway"?

Jordan Roth could easily name the loby-lounge at the St. James honoring Carol Channing

"The Carol Channing Ladies Restroom". The possibilities are endless...

Just think. Off the top of my head:
-- Angela Lansbury, Ethel Merman, Mary Martin, Zero Mostel, Gwen Verdon (and eventually at least Nathan Lane).
-- Julie Harris, Jason Robards, Colleen Dewhurst, James Earl Jones
-- Tennessee Williams (!!), Arthur Miller
-- Harold Prince, Bob Fosse, maybe even Gower Champion
-- Cole Porter, Jerry Herman, Jule Styne, Andrew Lloyd Webber
I just don't see how Channing would deserve recognition more than any of the above, with a couple arguable. Two hit shows just not enough."
Agree far more deserving then the Plymouth & Royale being renamed ~ Schoenfeld & Jacobs."
I agree with you 100%. I thought it was absurd...totally self-serving...sounds like something Drumpf would do.
Personally, I find it hard to believe we have an Al HirschfieldTheatre,a John Golden Theatre (no one knows who he is today), a Nederlander Theatre, a Minskoff Theatre, when we don't have theaters namedafter the names Imentioned above, as wellas others that I forgot, e.g., Irving Berlin, David Merrick. At least the Uris group finally named their theatre after George Gershwin. (Re Hirschfield, I loved his sketches, but did he really contribute more to the theatre than ANY of the people listed above)? And who is Broadhurst?
Further, while I have grown up loving the Majestic, the St. James, the Music Box (especially the one), the Palace, the Winter Garden, the Ambassador, et al, once they changed the names from Royale and Plymouth to those of businessmen, I have always felt there should be a few more changes. Do wereally not have a Tennessee Williams Theatre when we have a Neil Simon theatre (most of whose plays have aged faster than ice cream melts)?"
When was the last time the Shubert Org. renamed a Theatre on Broadway? The Plymouth & Royale back in 2005!
They could easily rename some of these theatres: Broadhurst, Imperial, Golden and Cort.
Why not the Broadhurst or Imperial after the most deserving...Mr. Broadway himself: Harold Prince!
The Golden or Cort after: Tennessee Williams!
I highly doubt these theatres will ever be renamed: St. James, Broadway, Palace, Winter Garden, Majestic Lyceum, Music Box.
Harold Prince and Tennessee Williams should have a Broadway Theatre renamed in their honor some time in the not so distant future.

Absolutely, but what I am reacting to is not those who are just having fun but those who feel self-entitled. It's a problem around here. (You, as an example, fall in the first category with your post above.)

No. The "problem around here" is the contributors who seldom post anything positive. Or kind, or cheerful, or uplifting, or nice. Who almost always make comments at the expense of others. Who add nothing to the discussion except a certain nastiness and unpleasantness. Who are, in a word, "BULLIES".
It just feels like if there is to be a Carol Channing Theater, it should be in Palm Springs and instead of doors, to enter, you walk through a huge pair of eyeglasses where the lenses slid open to let you in.

Well, if you think that's me, you haven't been around here long or much. (I'll just let the irony of the parenthetical in my post kinda float there without dissertation.)
But while I have your attention, you know what's at the expense of others? Co-opting the term "bullies." How dare you? There are people who suffer at the hands of bullies. You appropriate that term at the expense. Shame on you! (And if you don't see that as a positive contribution, then I question your perspective.
I thought of this when she passed, but realized decisions should not be made in the emotion of the moment. I'm not against a Carol Channing Theatre , but as other people have said there are a number of deserving honorees.
The said, Irving Berlin could be handled fairly simply without a complete name change. Recall that Berlin, and then his estate, co-owned the Music Box with the Shuberts until just a few years ago. Naming it "Irving Berlin's Music Box" or "Irving Berlin's Music Box Theatre" honors Berlin without losing the classic name AND puts the name on a logical theatre.
“Carol Channing's visited Lowell High School in November 2014. She was a delightfully charming and outrageously talented performer. She sang a very moving a capella version of "Before the Parade Passes By" that day in the Carol Channing Theater at Lowell -- truly unforgettable.”

Hogan, why do you even post here? You realize a public forum is a place to discuss these kinds of things, right? No one is feeling entitled, we are having a fun discussion, yet here you are to ruin it again. I think forums may not be the best place for you.
Aren't naming rights typically purchased in this day and age? Like, the Helen Hayes won't be named that once someone pays Second Stage for the rights, etc.
@Mike Barrett, as I said in the post, I have no problem with people having fun, but I do have a problem with people feeling self-entitled. And since I see you can't be bothered to notice what I wrote, I guess it's too much to ask that you notice that there are indeed posts in this thread that ooze entitlement.
@haterobics well someone who pays gets to choose. they could call it the Helen Hayes if they wanted, they could change it to the Carol Channing, or they could call it the Helen Hayes Carol Channing Theatre. Now wouldn't that be something?

Where was the entitlement? You make these claims then never back them up. Always sucking the fun out of these boards, people like you are why no one posts here anymore.
