If any of the Chicago fans are hardcore enough to head out to the theater for an understudy yet...
John Michael Coppola will be performing the role of Frankie Valli in JERSEY BOYS (Chicago Company) on Saturday, October 20th at 2:00PM at the LaSalle Bank Theater, Chicago, IL. http://broadwayunderstudies.com/
If you're from Chicago and have tickets to John Michael Coppola's performance or can see that show, you won't be dissapointed. He's an incredable actor. And I think he's the 4th cover for Frankie so he doesn't get to go on in the role much, but he's great when he gets to.

"Has Chicago had many really long-running sitdown musicals? What were they? I know San Francisco has, but I'm just curious that they had so much confidence to put that show there, and what they anticipate its run to be (I'm also not sure how big that theatre is)."
These are all the Broadway National Tours/Sit-down long-running shows in their INITIAL runs (does not include return engagements).
28 months — "Wicked" at Oriental Theatre, from 2005 18 months — "Joseph" at Chicago Theatre, 1993-95 16 months — "Show Boat" at Auditorium Theatre, 1996-97 15 months — "Godspell" at Studebaker Theatre, 1972-73 15 months — "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," Drury Lane Water Tower, from 2006 14 months — "Cats" at Shubert Theatre, 1985-86 13 months — "The Music Man" Shubert Theatre 1959-60 12 months — "Hair" at Shubert Theatre, 1969-70 12 months — "Hello, Dolly!" at Shubert Theatre, 1966 12 months — "A Chorus Line" at Shubert Theatre, 1978 11 months — "Evita" at Shubert Theatre, 1980-81 11 months — "Oklahoma!" at Erlanger Theatre, 1943 10 months — "Cactus Flower" at Blackstone Theatre, 1968 9 months — "Miss Saigon" at Auditorium Theatre, 1992-93 9 months — "The Phantom of the Opera" at Auditorium Theatre, 1990-91 8 months — "The Lion King" at Cadillac Palace Theatre, 2003 8 months — "Ragtime" at Oriental Theatre, 1998 6 months — "Les Miserables" at Auditorium Theatre, 1988
And San Francisco really hasn't had that many long-running sit-downs. Phantom was at 5 years, but nothing has topped it. Unless you count Beach Blanket.
Everything else I can think of that's been a "long" run (Bee, Rent, Les Miz) has come in under 2 years, if that.
"This thread reads like a series of White House memos." — Mister Matt
Also, some of the shows in Chicago closed for plitical reasons: Miss Saigon was to extend another three months, but the city council passed an entertainment tax which infuriated Cameron Macintosh so he decided to make it a National Tour instead. Phantom was still a few years away from the third National Company and they really needed to tour the show. I could have sworn Les Miz had a longer run, so perhaps one of the returns was longer. Ragtime would have run longer had it not been for the implosion of Livent.
The thing about Chicago is we are similar to New York in our theatrical tastes, so if we don't get the show relatively soon after it opens on Broadway (a year or so) the we lose interest, because a hotter show with buzz comes on the scene we'd rather see. Disney learned that the hard way: they waited until The Lion King opened on Broadway before Beauty and the Beast opened at the Chicago Theatre. By then people didn't care about Beauty, (it closed after five months playing to empty houses), they wanted the Lion King. But Disney didn't care, the failure of Beauty to them meant that Chicago couldn't support a show for more than a month. And they STILL believe that!
John Michael Coppola isn't the only understudy going on this weekend in Chicago.
From Broadwayunderstudies.com Steven M. Goldsmith is going on as Frankie Valli in JERSEY BOYS (Chicago Company) LaSalle Bank Theater, Chicago, IL for the evening show on Sunday, October 21st at 7:30pm.
For those people in Chicago, his Frankie rocks. You won't be dissapointed. Updated On: 10/19/07 at 03:42 PM
If they HAD to rename the Shubert, why oh why did it have to be LaSAlle Bank Theatre? That is without a doubt the stupidest name for a theatre I have ever heard! I have actually been known to stop using certain brands because of their advertising, so I will certainly never walk into a LaSalle Bank!
So there is an update on the JB newsletter with a great interview with Lauren Tartaglia. She talks about her whole audition experience, being throw into the tour at a moments notice, and confirms that she will be in the Vegas cast. Well read it. JB Newsletter October 19, 2007
Speaking of Chicago, I'm suprised no one from there has posted anything about it. And just wondering if anyone attended the book signing that they had yesterday?
And a month from now the next engagement starts in SF. I wonder if some of the crazy fans (some of you know who I'm talking about) show up in rush again or if they'll be some new ones.
Haha, I'm sure they'll be plenty of crazed fans rushing. It's really the only way for some of us to afford to see the show,. I just wonder who'll be there opening night. I'd love to go, just in case Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, and etc. will be there...but I don't know.
Haha, I'm sure they'll be plenty of crazed fans rushing.
Oh no I'm talking about certain individuals that the regulars in SF are familar with because, as it seems, we've all had encouters with them that were very awkward. Updated On: 10/21/07 at 12:12 AM
Ooh the "who thinks they'll be there" I was refering to was, which of the regulars in SF would rush opening night for the Vegas cast...haha, sorry for not clarifying.
Hmmm you mean like the guy with the beard and duffel bag and Deven's stalker?
I heard a small rumor that he might switch over, which I highly doubt. Updated On: 10/21/07 at 12:19 AM
The bearded guy with the duffel bag will probably be there. Some of us call him Crazy Claus, and hopefully there's only one. If you notice he never wears matching shoes. He's at the stagedoor even if he hasn't seen the show. Although security is aware of him, thank god.
There is also picture lady, and woman w/o a chin. But I've never heard of Deven's stalker, I think.
