I’m wondering how this is going to open up into a cinematic medium. The play itself was pretty perfect, as was Comer’s performance. I’m not sure what’s to be gained here other than “Cynthia Erivo now has clout for a vanity project”

To be fair, this was first announced two years ago when she had only just been cast in Wicked. Her most prominent screen role up until then had been Harriet. Did the success of Wicked help jump-start the film back into production? Probably. But it was clear she and Suzie Miller already had something in mind.

So a talented actress wanting to play a challenging role in a formidable show is now a "vanity project"?
I don’t think she has the range to do this. Of course my opinion.
