I can definitely say that is not the case. My last name is well toward the end of the alphabet and I have gotten a variety of seats throughout the years. Most recently, I had a first row seat at Floyd Collins (right beside Floyd Collins!). A 3rd row center seat at John Proctor, a row N side seat in Stranger Things, and a row G seat at Sunset Blvd.
If I had to guess, it would be that it is a list ordered by the time of purchase, so the earlier you buy the ticket (and the smaller your party), the better seat you are going to get."
That was my experience over the years as well. If I buy early, I get great seats. It was just surprising to get the back of the side orchestra seat which I've gotten as a much cheaper rush seat before. The faint stench coming from the seats made my experience even worse.
