Psycho or Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion. Alan Cumming would be great in either.

The Graduate came out. According to IBDB, it opened on Apr 4, 2002 and closed on Mar 2, 2003.

It was definitely a movie before it was anything.
The novel came first, then the movie, then (years later) the play.
