MB, who did they end up getting for the Beggar Woman? I know Burton was going after Natasha Richardson, but I never heard if it panned out or not.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
I think Burton nixed the idea of getting an older actress to play the Beggar Woman and that LMK is playing the entire role. I'm assuming this, because it was one of the roles my friend at Dreamworks said the studio was a little upset over; they apparently went for names for both the Beggar Woman and Anthony, and after neither panned out Burton cast "nobodys".
I'd be scared if I were DREAMWORKS too, frankly. You've never heard of anyone in this movie, except for the two leads. Updated On: 2/6/07 at 09:54 PM
It will be fantastic finally having an actor the right age for Tobias! While Mano gave a great performance last year, he was hardly believable as a young pre-pubescent boy!
MB, although they couldn't get a name, at least we know LMK will be fantastic.

Well this kid looks about 9. I dont know how old he is but that is how old he looks. You are thinking of Miranda Richardson. Updated On: 2/5/07 at 10:06 PM
MB - can it be gavroche instead? 8( Unless it's "As Long As He Needs Me" I have this whole thing about avoiding Oliver!. It's kind of like in Chicago how Amos avoids getting laid.
Kids - relax. Someone will post it but its probably going to be a few days. Subscriptions to Daily Variety aren't exactly the same thing as People Magazine...

Can't find the ad anywhere online, but while looking I found this 19 Jan Variety clip re the singing:
[producer Richard] "Zanuck calls it a "horror musical," which like the stage production will be mostly sung. "And everyone in it will be doing their own singing, including Sacha Baron Cohen," who plays a rival barber to Johnny Depp's Sweeney. John Logan ("Gladiator," "The Last Samurai") has written the script, and the film will be produced entirely at London's Pinewood Studios early this year.""
worrell4077, Jeremy Sumpter (Peter Pan) is not in the film.
I have the logo being e-mailed to me and will publish it onto MovieMusicals.net once we are launched.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Someone scan the Variety ad please; it's not online anywhere. Don't make me kill a tree...
from DigitalSpy.co.uk:
"Johnny Depp has started the preparation for his role in the film version of Sweeney Todd. The actor has started making regular journeys to London for vocal coaching. Staff at Air Studios have confirmed Depp has attended the venue, but nobody has been allowed to hear him sing yet.
"Johnny has a closed set with just him and the director, but I've heard he can hold a note or two," a source said.
from the Sondheim Society's discussion board:
"It seems the sections of chorus where there is no real crowd dramatic action (e.g. the opening number) is being sung by a small group of ghosts."
"By the sound of things all the "non" singers are having a good go; including Timothy Spall as the Beadle: admitadly he may not have all the top notes."
the post mentions something about Christopher Lee? Is he in the movie?
as for Sondheim being the "reason" Carter and Depp were cast... I don't think so. Seeing how close those two are with Burton, it's more likely he had cast approval but Burton is the one who cast them... why, I'll never know. oh wait... I know... because Dreamworks wants to pull a Dreamgirls again and pack the cast with superstars! Except of course, Sweeney Todd is NOT Dreamgirls... you can't just improvise yourself an opera singer, especially not a baritone.
I have a real bad feeling about this... and I love Burton! If anyone could make a great real movie from a musical, Sweeney and Burton were a match made in heaven. But Depp, as much as I think he's an excellent actor and would do the part justice as a straight movie, leaves me skeptical. I mean... it's bad enough that Hollywood thinks you can just cast anyone who sings in the shower to be in a musical (uh... POTO anyone?) without realizing that the singing is actually part of the acting and that you need experience to do that but of they think a few months of 'vocal coaching' is going to help Depp SING Sweeney... they are downright delusional!
we'll see I guess but it's a shame it's going to be sabotaged with star casting. If they want to so that, they should stick to jukebox musicals or easier modern scores.
