I'd like to submit last night's SNL as John Mulaney's official Tonys Host application.

I wouldn't say it's a rule, but I don't think they'd go with someone who's not at least a fan of theatre or has some connection to it. "Wolf Blitzer Hosts the Tonys!" doesn't have a great ring to it.
For example, Colbert hasn't been on Broadway but he likes theatre and was in Company with the NY Phil. Rachel Bloom is another person who hasn't done Broadway but is sort of "theatre-adjacent" (not that she'd be great for ratings).

A host isn't really needed. Charismatic presenters can suffice.
I'd rather see the time that's allocated to a host's schtick be used to reinstate presenting scenes from the Tony nominated plays. Much as I love them, musicals aren't the only shows on Broadway, and I really miss the Tony shows that presented scenes from the plays as well.
I mean, c'mon... Why would I choose to watch 'host schtick' when the casts of every award-nominated show are right there to whet my whistle for the main attractions?

This would have been more relevant for the 2017 ceremony, but I still want them to host as George and Gil.

This whole hosting shtick has become outmoded, tedious and tiresome. Trash it.

My predictions so rarely pan out, this is my equivalent of winning a Tony. By which I mean, I only get a shot at accurately predicting something about once a year. lol

I love Corden and am sure he'll be a brilliant host again! It won't have the ratings spike of 2016, because that was Hamilton + Corden's first time hosting an awards show, but it will be so much better than the last 2 years of hosts.

I’m a little tired of Corden’s schtick now, ngl! He’s become as sycophantic as Ellen when it comes to sucking up to guests. But he was a decent Tony host last time I guess. I’d just prefer to see someone new hosting!

Posted: 3/19/19 at 1:52pmI think the last time he hosted I was just so touched by his opening speech I kind of don’t remember what else he did. I thought sara and josh were great hosts and did a pretty good job popping in every now and then. I don’t understand why Colbert doesn’t do it. He’s under contract with CBS and his show is taped in NY. Having corden do it just seems too much effort on CBS’ part. I’m curious if John Mulaney couldn’t do it due to his ties with NBC/Lorne Michaels

Posted: 3/19/19 at 2:04pmI think Corden makes sense over Colbert only because he has a history with the theater. I don’t even know if Colbert goes to the theater. I think the comparison of Ellen to Corden is an apt one. I personally like him more these days, but agree there’s not much surprising about his show these days. Still, he’s passionate about theater so gets the insider humor better and he is safe choice. No one is going to discover a homophobic tweet from years ago or likely to accuse him of sexual impropriety.

I could be wrong, but I believe I read one time that once you host SNLyou cannot appear on another network for a couple months. Hence why we never see a host go on Colbert the week after or anything. Im not sure its the case for everyone but I do think this is a thing to a certain extent.

Alex, that would be my guess.
Miles, Colbert is pretty well known for being a supporter of the theatre and has musicals perform on his show often. He’s never been on broadway, but he was in that production of company with NPH and Patti LuPone.

Colbert loves the theater and he even sang at the 2011 Tony award opener!

FWIW... I went to a taping of the Late Show, and he does a Q&A with the audience as a warmup before they start filming the show. Someone asked him, "I know you're a big Broadway fan, if you could be in any show on Broadway, what would you do?" And he looked right at Jon Batiste, who looked at the band, and they immediately busted into "Heaven on Their Minds." Colbert knew it backwards and forwards, and totally sold it. (Entirely possible that the whole thing was staged, but my gut says it wasn't.)
That's anecdotal, but I came away from that taping without a doubt in my mind that he really is a well-seasoned Broadway fan.
IMHO I enjoy both him and Cordon (and John Mulaney), and would've been happy with any of them!

No, I don't think that's a factor. Mulaney and Fey aren't "owned" by NBC in the way that Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and the Weekend Update guys are. Sure, Lorne Michaels was responsible for Mulaney hosting SNL and Fey's 30 Rock success, but Lorne doesn't run the network. Last year, Tina probably didn't want to jump straight from a preview period into prepping to host an awards show while campaigning to win a Tony.
I can almost guarantee that Mulaney wasn't even asked to host. Corden's a much bigger star, and as fun as Mulaney would be, he's not going to be on their top 10 wishlist at this point in his career. He doesn't mean that much outside of millennial/standup comedy circles, although he's more famous now than when he did Oh Hello.
