Tony Awards Dress Rehearsal
#1Tony Awards Dress Rehearsal
Posted: 6/7/14 at 8:25pmI looked and didn't see anything posted about this. Is anyone going or has anyone been in the past? The tickets say the doors open at 9 and the dress is from 9:30-1. What time do people start lining up? There are seat locations on the ticket, but it also says General Admission (which I am thinking is the case). Also, I am assuming dress would be casual/business casual? Does anyone have any insight? All I know is that I am friggin' excited! I know it is only the dress, but it is pretty much a dream come true for me and know it will be a fun experience that I will always remember!

Posted: 6/7/14 at 8:58pmThanks for the response, CPD. I was kind of thinking the same in terms of attire and getting there between 8 and 8:30 depending on trains. Should also be interesting filing out afterwards while the parade is on 5th with people heading over there!

Posted: 6/7/14 at 9:17pmI am wearing jeans also but note that at times Radio City has been freezing cold and at other times, pretty warm. Bring/wear layers..you want to be comfy. (OK, I am sounding like a mom...)

The BWW Live Blogger has left out three things:
-When is Orchestrations being presented?
-What is "Violet" performing?
-When is Leading Actress in a Play being presented?

When is Orchestrations being presented?
During a commercial break, as are best Book of a Musical, Best Lighting, and a few others. Which is pretty egregious.

Best Book of a Musical and Best Choreography too from what I could tell, which just seems ludicrous. However, I've heard from a few insiders that Les Moonves was adamant, get as many stars (Affiliated with Broadway or not) on the show as possible, and give out as many awards that the masses won't care about during commercial breaks. He is concerned with ratings, as the Tonys will go head to head with NBA Finals on ABC, and to a smaller extent HBO shows (GOT), E! (Kardashians return tonight as well). All of which will detract from people who don't really care about Broadway shows.

It was the same thing last year - both Choreography and Book were given during the commercials and we just saw clips of their acceptance speeches.
I would like to really blame CBS and Les M for this... but frankly, CBS has been pretty faithful and good to the Tony's for many many years despite the ratings being mediocre (sometimes downright bad). It's a shame more people don't watch but I would like to commend CBS for sticking with the Tony's when others might have dropped them already.
Sure I would like to see more (and years ago, PBS used to telecast the creative arts awards right before the regular telecast - I remember having to switch channels at that point- but even PBS said it was too pricey and stopped)...and I might disagree with some of CBS' choices, but I don't feel comfy being too picky at this point.

Posted: 6/8/14 at 2:01pmI feel like I distinctly remember Jerry Mitchell accepting for Best Choreography for Kinky Boots last year, during the telecast? Did I make that up or was it just a clip, that I assumed was an entire speech. Craziness.

Posted: 6/8/14 at 2:06pmDepaultheatrekid, I'm 99% sure Mitchell's speech was shown as a clip last year. They did, however, present Best Score during the broadcast last year. Probably because they were aware of the likelihood of Cyndi Lauper winning.

Posted: 6/8/14 at 3:21pmAgreed. I wish more of the creative awards were in the show but I appreciate Les and CBS staying loyal to the TONYS and all the extra performances. It's Broadways ONE night to shine. You gotta give em what they came for.

Posted: 6/8/14 at 3:54pmGotta say that this morning was a true treat (and A LOT of Billy Porter and Karen Ziemba). And it's not a spoiler, but holy damn...JHud knocked the Finding Neverland song out of the park. Gorgeous. Sting was great too. Nice to get a little preview of the upcoming season in the show (there were clips too for some other shows). My only complaint was the Rocky bit (aside from the first few seconds). Didn't sell the show to me at all. On the other hand, I had no desire to see Gentleman's Guide (go ahead, shoot me) until today. Can't wait to actually find out the winners in just a couple of hours. Such a tease. I have to wonder how many of the "fake" winners actually win, because some of the "fakes" seemed dead on.
