Rest in peace to two-time Tony nominee Tony Roberts, who was always a joy to watch on stage and screen.
By my count, he appeared in 24 Broadway shows, starting with TAKE HER, SHE'S MINE in 1961 and continuing through THE ROYAL FAMILY in 2009. I saw his final stage performance in MORNING'S AT SEVEN in 2021.
His other stage credits included Sugar, Victor/Victoria, The Tale of the Allergist's Wife, Xanadu, Barefoot in the Park (twice), Promises Promises, How Now Dow Jones, Play it Again Sam, Cabaret, and the Paper Mill production of Follies. His screen credits included Serpico, Annie Hall, Star Spangled Girl, Play it Again Sam, and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three.
The NYT said he died in Manhattan due to complications from lung cancer.

One of my favorite character actors with a number of memorable roles from the 70's, 80's and 90's both on screen and on stage. He'll be missed. R.I.P. Tony.

I got to witness his talent when he played the Starkeeper in Carousel at the Lyric Opera Chicago! He made an incredible impact on me despite being in a somewhat featured role.

I was introduced to the incredible talents of both Betty Buckley and Tony Roberts when I saw them star in the 1969 London production of "Promises, Promises". Such joy.

Saw him shortly after he took over in "They're Playing Our Song". Knew him from his TV appearances back then. Rest in Peace.

I saw him here in NY opposite Jenny O'Hara (Jill's sister). He replaced Jerry Orbach after the London engagement. The London recording of "Promises, Promises" is much better than its Broadway counterpart.
I used to see Tony Roberts everywhere when I lived on the Upper West Side. At the movies, at the theatre, at Zabar's, at Fairway, in Central Park...as a huge Woody Allen fan back then I always got a kick out of that.
May he Rest In Peace.

I passed him on 8th Ave about a week after I saw him in Mornings at Seven in 2021. I loved him every time I saw Xanadu. R.I.P. Tony.

May he RIP … he was an underrated actor. I love his CC Baxter on the OLCR of PROMISES.
Word has it he was chosen to replace Orbach but Buckley wasn’t offered as the producers weren’t too enamored of her “Fran” so they went with Jill’s sister Jenny which caused a rift between the two sisters as Jill was not too happy about that.
