Jennifer doesn't appear to be too surprised by the lack of nomination apparently.
(hope the link works I'm on my phone)"
Well that's a bitter tweet for someone still in the show to send out.
"
She has done a very nice tweet about Cynthia and the cast since this but it is rather confusing

I'm surprised how many people think Jonathan Groff didn't deserve the nomination because he's not on stage as much as other actors. The nomination is for best performance, not "most time on stage". He owns the stage for those 9 minutes. It's a memorable role and a memorable performance. He makes better use of his limited stage time than actors who are onstage for most of the show. His nomination was more of a given than Chris Jackson- who is wonderful, but more of a solemn performance than the Tonys usually acknowledge.
If Hamilton wins only one acting award in the 4 categories, it should be Daveed Diggs, but Jonathan Groff was of course going to be nominated for a stand-out role like King George."
Totally agreed. Groff's King George is a scene-stealing comedic role that the Tonys like to reward with a nomination. It's a prime standout in a production that has quite a few standouts already, and people have a very strong positive reaction to it.

Jordan you're the first person I've seen express this. I loved the production, but I'm not sure what her portrayal of Elizabeth was all about. Can you explain why you liked it?

All three of the men in Hamilton are deserving of their nominations.
Bright Star for the Best Book Nom? Seriously? The ridiculously banal ending totally destroys the show for me.
I think there were definitely more deserving performances than Groff, but the Hamilton wave is unstoppable.
That tweet from Hudson didn't seem like she was pleased with not being nommed.
To be honest, I think it's, to some extent, sort of a foolproof role and anyone who originated it would've been nominated. But Groff does go above & beyond the strengths of the writing.

Jeff Daniels was nominated!
I did know that. I had Jeff Daniels on the brain, for some reason, but thanks for the correction :)

Do the nominators speak to each other about who they nominate? I assumed it was done in secrecy, to avoid collusion or whatever.
No, it's an open discussion.
Not a rant, but I was kind of hoping that SIerra Bogess would sneak in for supporting actress.

What does Long Day's Journey have to do with anything? What are you talking about?

I think Brian D'Arcy would have had just as good a chance of a nom in the same role that he originated.

As you get older you lose interest in many things. Earlier this year, it was the Oscars. This year may be the Tonys. Why watch an award show when you basically know about 1/2 the winners ahead of time?
"
Actually, the big presence of the juggernaut will probably make for big ratings. The Oscars get much better ratings when commercially successful films are nominated versus critical but not financially big films lead nominations.

I honestly can't even wrap my head around that.
"
I don't really disagree with her but I don't think she is making a case for herself. Yes a star in a stage vehicle can't hurt and people would come to see her so maybe....she got the part because of her celebrity.... not because of her talent. That said, would she have gotten the part on her talent alone? I am not sure..
Don't get me wrong, she was fine... but she wasn't a standout like Cynthia and Danielle. Her singing was amazing but her acting felt a little flat at times. Well to me anyway...

I know! Groff had an amazing performance, but he's not in it as much as Daveed and Chris. I personally think that Anthony Ramos should have gotten the nomination instead of Groff, but any of the nominees for Best Featured Actor are deserving.
"
"
I was hoping Ramos would sneak in bc he really is great and it's much more noticeable when he's out. I'm not surprised Groff got in because he is a great example of making the most out of his stage time.
I wish there was a best newcomer category because I feel like Jasmine Cephas Jones is really great and gets very little attention. I hope she becomes a star!
I wish the Tony's added a "best new breakout star" category

Agreed! Is anyone as surprised as i am that Adrienne Warren got a nod over Sierra, Keala or Jessica Hecht?

I speak for a lot of people when i say the biggest missing category right now is Sound Design.
And if there was a breakout star category, I'd still give it to Cynthia Erivo. Rachel Tucker would get a nod here too. (Almost sounding like a "Best Across The Pond Import"

I've never seen the show, so I can't talk. I just have a small feeling it was recognized so much because of the book writer's name
My fault with Bright Star getting a Book nom isn't necessarily in the quality of the writing or the ending—it's that it's structured in a way that you see the "twist" coming from 7,000 miles away. If you can see what's going to happen that early on in the show, you have a poorly structured book on your hands. Simple as that. It certainly wouldn't have received a nomination if it was written by somebody of lesser fame than Steve Martin.

Not at all. In a star-studded show, she made a huge impression on me- great voice, flawless dancing, and she has considerable presence on stage. I wouldn't have expected it before seeing the show, but afterwards I totally get it.
Just like last year, I have no qualms with the nominations with the exception of Hudson's snub, lack of Fiddler on the Roof nominations (though I guess 3 is enough), and some little things here and there. Really good year all around and for Hamilton to get 16 nominations is indeed a record that was made to be broken, well deserved in my opinion.
Can't wait until June.
