I think that FEATURED ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL is going to be a hot race. Andrea Martin PIPPIN Analeigh Ashford KINKY BOOTS Keala Settle HANDS ON A HARD BODY Dale Soules HANDS ON A HARD BODY Jessie Mueller MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD Lauren Ward MATILDA Victoria Clark CINDERELLA
All of those could be considered a 'lock' or have a very good shot. Personally I would be thrilled if JM was nominated for DROOD....that was a sublime performance.
I agree undercoveractor in so much as I think Featured Actress will be a race for the nomination. But I've never been as sure of a lock as I am not that I've seen Andrea Martin.
I'd guess the other nominees to be: Annaleigh Ashford KINKY BOOTS Keala Settle HARDBODY Jessie Mueller DROOD and then a hard-fought battle for the fifth slot between Lauren Ward in MATILDA, Victoria Clark in CINDERELLA, and Valisia LeKae in MOTOWN (I think the last spot will depend very, very much on which show has the most momentum). I will go out on a limb and say Ward gets it.
WAIT! How did I forget Chita?!?! I'll call the fifth slot hers instead.
I feel more confident about my Best Actor in a Musical picks which would be: Anthony Warlow-Annie Rob McClure-Chaplin Billy Porter – Kinky Boots Santino Fontana – Cinderella Brandon Victor Dixon - Motown
I think matilda will sweep the board... It's not groundbreaking but as a piece of entertainment and a production as a whole it's flawless, it is the rsc after all

I love and admire Chita Rivera as much as anybody, but for me she was a big disappointment in DROOD. Maybe it is because I loved Cleo Laine so much, I'm not sure....but I think if she gets a nomination it will be more because she is beloved and less about her performance. Just my opinion.
I feel it will be more Mrs. Wormwood for the featured actress slot as opposed to Miss Honey. Wormwood has the showier role. Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood will be nominated for featured actor/actress, and Bertie Carvel should be nominated for Leading Actor.
I'd love to see Bring It On get the up-in-the-air nom for best musical... it certainly wasn't deep, brilliant theatre but I left grinning from ear to ear and had a really great time. Plus, it's unique, which I appreciated.
It'd be cool if Patina Miller and Bertie Carvel both won. Gender bender Tonys! (I haven't seen Matilda yet but I thought Miller knocked it out of the park. I liked but didn't love her in Sister Act but I thought she was just fabulous in Pippin.)
Musicaldudepeter, do you really feel like Bertie Carvel had a lead role? I know he won Best Actor at the Oliviers, but that reeks of category fraud to me. It's a role that calls a lot of attention to itself, but it's really a rather small part.
I could certainly understand if the producers WANT him as Lead Actor as there's much less competition in that category this year, but he's below title, and I don't know if I can imagine a petition to make him lead being successful.
As nice as his performance was, I dont think Santino Fontana has any reason to be nominated. The other performers you mentioned were much better and more dynamic.
Sauja, there's a separate thread dedicated to Carvel's situation as lead or featured actor - check it out
But in my opinion, they'll want to strategically place their actors in Matilda as much as possible to ensure multiple wins, and when it comes down to it, there is no leading male role, and of the two, Mr. Wormwood is the more 'featured' part, therefore Carvel I would imagine will be slotted into the Leading category... could be wrong though.
Best Musical: Matilda* Kinky Boots Hands on a Hardbody (If it remains open through nominations) A Christmas Story
If Hands on a Hardbody does not stay open through nominations I believe Bring It ON will get the nomination
Best Revival of a Musical: Annie The Mystery of Edwin Drood Pippin* Cinderella
Best Actor Musical: Billy Porter in Kinky Boots* Hunter Foster in Hands on a Hardbody (If he is determined to be a lead which I think he is since although the show focuses on all of the contestants he has 4 songs compared to the rest of them having 1 as well as most of the conflict outside of he actual conflict is brought about by his character) Rob McLure in Chaplin Anthony Warlow in Annie Santino Fontana in Cinderella
*If Hunter Foster is moved to supporting then I think Brandon Victor Dixon in Motown
Best Actress in a Musical: Laura Osnes in Cinderella* Lilla Craford in Annie Stephanie J. Block in The Mystery of Edwin Drood Patina Miller in Pippin The Matildas
If the nominating committee rules 4 actors cannot be jointly nominated which I believe they should...I believe Carolee Carmello will get nominated for her outstanding and better performance in Scandalous
Featured Actress: Andrea Martin in Pippin* Analeigh Ashford in Kinky Boots* Keala Settle in Hands on a Hardbody Victoria Clark or Ann Harada in Cinderella (I have a feeling Clark's Costume is going to be her Achilles Heel because you forget about her performance and instead think of Harada's one liners) Jessie Meuller in The Mystery of Edwin Drood although I think Ryann Redmond may steal a nomination like she stole the show.
Featured Actor: Bertie Carval in Matilda* Will Chase in The Mystery of Edwin Drood Gregory Haney in Bring It On! David Larson in Hands on a Hardbody Andy Karl's Eyebrows in The Mystery of Edwin Drood
If Hunter Foster is determined to be Supporting he will bump Andy Karl's eyebrows' nomination since their owner decided to depart the show for Jersey Boys instead of closing the show and I think the nominators will take note of that.
Director: Matthew Warchus- Matilda* Diane Paulus - Pippin Jerry Mitchell - Kinky Boots Josh Rhodes - Hands on a Hardbody
Choreography: Josh Rhodes - Cinderella Sergio Trujillo- Hands on a Hardbody Andy Blankenbuehler - Bring It On! Gypsy Snider/Chet Walker - Pippin* (If Circus material is ruled as choreography if not Matilda will get the nomination)
Best Score: Matilda* Kinky Boots Hands on a Hardbody A Christmas Story
*If Hardbody closes before nomination I think Bring It on will get its nomination

Best Revival of a Play: Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf? *(Essentially a lock for a win as well since its cast will likely get snubbed due to the show no long being open) Macbeth Golden Boy The Trip to Bountiful/Orphans/Cyrano
Best Actor in a Play: Tracy Letts in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Tom Hanks in Lucky Guy* Alan Cumming in Macbeth Nathan Lane in The Nance Jim Parsons in Harvey or David Hyde Pierce in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike
Best Actress in a Play Amy Morton in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Holland Taylor in Anne Jessica Chastain in The Heiress Kristin Neilson in VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE* Sigourney Weaver in VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE
Featured Actor: Madison Dirks in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?* Billy Magnussen in VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE* Bobby Cannavale in Glengarry Glen Ross Cuba Gooding Jr. in The Trip to Bountiful Danny Burstein in Golden Boy or Ed Asner in Grace
Featured Actress: Carrie Coon in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?* Judith Ivey in The Heiress Judith Light in The Assembled Parties Shalita Grant in VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE* Jenni Barber in The Nance (I think her nomination will also be recognition to The Performers as a whole)
Director: Pam MacKinnon for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?* George C. Wolfe for Lucky Guy Nicholas Martin for VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE John Tiffany/Andrew Goldberg for Macbeth
Costumes: The Heiress Cyrano The Nance *Filler* Whoever is running the board for plays will likely get a nom here
Set: Lucky Guy VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? MacBeth
Wait, when they announced that Osnes and Fontana are considered for Tony nominations, it was only those 2, so I don't think that Victoria or Ana will be nominated. And that's too bad too :/ Clarke was great in the Macy Parade.
Anyway, to add on to BDN'S post I think Laura Ward and/or Lesli M. will be nominated for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. And as much as I love Laura and I can't wait for her to get a Tony, I HIGHLY doubt that she'll win. I think it's a tie between the Matildas and Patina Miller, but I think it may be the Matildas. Additionally, Matilda will be nominated for Best Cheography. Also, I'm guessing Bertie will be nominated for Best Leading Actor, but like Osnes, he has serious competition with Billy Porter. So, I think it would be better for the producers for him to get Featured Actor.
I also think Annie will be nominated for Best Set Design. For Best Direction, Matilda has serious competition with Pippin and I think A. Ashford, so it would be great to finally see her nominated for a Tony.
I just think it's hilarious that, of all the names in VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE, you insistently misspelled the easiest one.
Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
