Does anyone else think it's a shame that this season is turning out to be so packed with hyped shows? There are only a certain number of theatre-goers per year, and we may end up seeing some quality shows fail in the chaos.

On the other hand, mediocre shows from last season have lasted longer than they might have due to the lack of fresh competition.

Albeit, some of the shows this season may turn out to be big disappointments anyway, but it doesn't seem possible to have more than 3 or so big hits in a single season.

I haven't really seen any of the shows that are planning on coming in, but I, for one, am excited. From what I can tell, most have these shows have been getting good feedback from their out-of-town or off-Broadway productions, so hopefully they will only improve upon coming to Broadway.

I don't think there's any stopping everyone from getting excited about the new season after a dud such as this one.

Mediocrity has less to do with a show than popularity. Case-in-point: MAMMA MIA!

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I just feel that no matter what, a worthy score is going to be left out of the Tony nominations, you have:

BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON
THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS
CATCH ME IF YOU CAN
SISTER ACT
and what we can assume is good:
WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN
SPIDERMAN: TURN OFF THE DARK (people who have heard it say so at least)

and then possibly:
LEAP OF FAITH
LOVE NEVER DIES

And that's just the one category.

You forgot Yank? Yeah, they might just expand the list of contenders to five. Or retroactively revoke Memphis' win, have all worthy musicals compete and award two Tony's. No complaints here. Too Many Hyped Shows?

We have seven shows bandied about for next season, 6 of which are basically a done deal (Yank!, though announced, may dissolve- who knows? We haven't heard anything in a while). And of those six, four are already known and tested.

I think it's great that this season is looking so good. I can't remember the last time I've been so excited for a season- I'm looking forward to all but one of the announced new musicals. And not just cautious optimism. THIS is what Broadway needs to reinvigorate itself and the Tony awards- a season full of winners.

If the opposite of too much hype is too little interest, I'll take the former, every time.

It is going to be so refreshing to see a season highlighted by original musicals, rather than jukebox musicals and so many revivals. It will be great to see fierce competition for best original score and best new musical.

You've also left out THE BOOK OF MORMON... another true original, coming this season.

I ALWAYS forget about Book of Mormon and I have no idea why! I've heard really excellent things about it, as well.

This season is going to be crazy good. Hopefully.

Am I the only one that thinks Book of Mormon should go into the Golden? It would be the perfect house for it, post-Q.

The Golden is too small for BOOK OF MORMON.

AASJB, would you mind PM-ing me the MORMON script. I imagine you have it, considering that you know that the Golden would be a perfect fit.

Isn't Priscilla hitting this season too?

This thread is silly.

Not enough good things in one season I get. But too much? Oy vey.

I'm with Mildred. Why be so glass-half-full on the season?

This will be the first time I have lived in NYC to experience the whole season. I hope to catch many first previews, an opening night maybe, and if I like something, see it multiple times. So, the better the season, the better this experience will be...and the slate of productions promises to be amazing. Count me among those that are elated (and not dubious) about the season!!!!

Not everyone will love Priscilla and Sister Act, but for the rest, they are both fabulous shows which will uplift spirits and the audiences will leave the theatres with big fat grins.

Both of which I feel, will be (more than) welcome additions to Broadway. And certainly worth the hype.

Personally I would rather have to bump shows from my trip list because there are too many I'm interested in that struggle to come up with 8 shows to see in a week as I did this past year.

I whole-heartedly agree, Mildred!

I'm not even coming in for an entire week in August as I usually do, and even with the short stays I AM coming in for, I am seeing mostly OFF B'way shows. (That in itself is not horrible.) I often see SOME off b'way, but out of the 7 shows I have 'slated', right now I only have plans for one or two to be actual B'WAY shows.

My only "complaint" with all the shows for the season? Is that I won't be able to actually SEE everything I'm interested in!

TOO MANY?! If anything, it's good that we have so many shows to buzz about! This past season was, for me, the weakest season for musicals I've ever known, period! And just for the record, I wasn't really paying attention during the 2002-2003 season.
