Twitter campaign kicks off to save Broadway’s ‘For Colored Girls’

Well, I'll give them this: at least they've actually using tactics that involve purchasing tickets. When I first saw this headline, I assumed it would just be some online petition started by a fan who doesn't understand the economics of Broadway (which is how most of these crowd "campaigns" manifest).

So I applaud them for actually using tangible means of trying to save the show. $15,000 won't recoup the show, but that's $15,000 LESS down the drain for the investors who took an admirable risk by bringing this to Broadway.

It seems like they are hoping for a 'chain reaction' of sorts - those who get the free tickets will encourage others to see the show and buy tickets, or return to see the show once more with tickets they buy. It's a rather narrow strategy.

Better than nothing, which seemed like the original "strategy." I feel like I was only getting banner ads because I visited their website.

Assuming everyone's already on waivers or at minimum salaries with virtually no advertising spend, they can probably break even around $300K per week. They did $250K last week, which was up from the previous week.

The more likely situation is that the grosses don't matter and someone came through with a priority loan or emergency funding to let it run another month.

A Director said: "In a just world, FUNNY GIRL would close now and FOR COLORED GIRLS would keep running."

In a just world, both would be thriving and finding success at the box office. No need to trade off one for another - they both deserve success.

Their website still showing tickets through May 22 only.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Unfortunately Ayanna's efforts have taken a turn, as she and her followers have been upset that people involved in the show have not mentioned her specifically in this campaign. I think it's been referenced as a "grassroots effort" by the show's director and PR team, but Ayanna seems to be looking for credit. It's weird.

This may just be my read of the situation, but it didn't seem like she was explicitly looking for credit at all. while she was upset no one mentioned her involvement in getting it started, it was other people who felt she was being erased that spoke up on her behalf.

If Ayanna is seeking any kind of credit or recognition –– public or private –– for "starting" a grassroots effort like this, that would be idiotic and egotistical. Ayanna was mentioned in the NYPost and Fox5 pieces, which surely have more eyeballs than NY1. Camille credited her publicist (the other person who helped amplify the effort) in the swirl of excitement moments after getting nominated, so any "erasure" was by a Black woman about a Black woman. As with most things surrounding Broadway, no one person is singularly responsible.

But ultimately, as we saw from the grosses last week, it didn't help: the show LOST $90K from its already-bad number from the week before.

For the love of God, who's making the decisions here? Telecharge still selling through June 12. Website STILL showing only through May 22.

I was in the Booth box office today and the employee told someone it's running through May 22. So I don't know what the deal is, but obviously they're still having a hell of a time selling tickets so it would be a waste of money to keep it running. The Twitter campaign is well-intentioned but is not moving the needle in ANY substantial way.

Also, after tonight's curtain call there was an announcement touting the Tony noms. Then they brought Camille out onstage, gave her flowers, she started hugging each of the ladies, and then the lights went out and they dropped the curtain while she was still getting around to hug the ladies. Very weird and anticlimactic. No speech, and she didn't really look at the audience or bow.

Extension seems doubtful at this point though Telecharge still has tickets for sale through June 12.

So only until June 5, not June 12, despite Telecharge still selling through the 12th?
