Now confirmed at an, er... slightly more reputable source.
"

I would hardly call Broadway.com a "slightly more reputable source"...especially with how much they scam people in the way of tickets and the prices. But, yes, everyone else (include our own BWW) has her playing Carrie (including IBDB.com)

Wow, I broke out into an ear-to-ear grin when I saw this announcement. I'm even more excited about this production now. Congrats to Lindsay! She's a great actress. They have some seriously talented people in this production - well done!

The “plenty of white actresses who look more Latin than actual Latinx people” argument was one of the main pointsin the recentEvitacasting controversy. It’s an argument that leads to the erasure of Latinx people onstage because white people can “pass.”"

I think its more complicated than that. The recent argument in the Evita casting was because those protesting were arguing that people of Latinx descent somehow have some insight into the inner life of those characters that Caucasian actors don't, which unless they are from Argentina, I think is rather silly.

Look I totally understand those who feel like they are discriminated against because of their ethnicity, and that there is a need for open mindedness and equality, but in the case of the Latinx arguements, it does seem to me to be about what we 'perceive to be Latin' being appropriate for the roles based on physical appearances.

How do you quantify that when someone like Elena Roger (a true Latinx) looks more Caucasian than Patti LuPone? Or myself who can claim Latin descent, even though I have no affinity to Latin language or culture?

She reaches an E6 in “Bless the Lord” in the Godspell recording. (That’s the high note Christine sings in the title song of Phantom.) She also sings the sustained C6 (up to the D6) in “We Beseech Thee.” There’s a legit soprano in her for sure.

Oh...Gee.
I'd like to be
On some marquee,
All twinkling lights,
And at least two other sources
Which enforces
...something that rhymes with light

(what, I'm not a lyricist okay)

...But I am!

"Gee, I'd like to be

On some marquee,

All twinkling lights.

With a source just to enforce

My career's course,

God, that message board bites!"

Ha! Love it. When this thread was started last night, BWW immediately posted an “article” speculating on the casting with a ? In the title. It doesn’t get more official than having your name on the marquee. The interwebs amuse me so.

It amuses me that Kelli O'Hara and Jessie Mueller were in Carousel with the NYPhil and both played Billie Bendix in Nice Work If You Can Get It.

Then Jessie Mueller moved to Broadway, in the other role, with Betsy Wolfe...and both played Jenna Hunterson in Waitress.

Then Lindsay Mendez replaced Betsy, and both of them were in Everyday Rapture...this is some 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon s***!

I do find all this ‘hoo har’ about non-traditional casting funny. She basically looks white! We lump ‘POC’ in one category but I can’t imagine Lindsay suffering discrimination the way an Asian, African American or Middle Eastern person might. I wonder if whoever cast her even thought this was non-traditional or simply saw her as the best person for the part.

Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

For me, I was skeptical of the *photo* of the marquee. Without seeing it in person, I just assumed it could potentially have been photoshopped.

First off, Latinx sounds like a terrible drag name, and I'm not saying anything bad about Mendez. I think she's awesome, and I find it kind of interesting that she is replacing her "Everyday Rapture" castmate. I'm just saying that her casting doesn't, to me, overtly say "MIXED CAST DIVERSITY." I think it's great she is hispanic. I have nothing bad to say about that, and ultimately, I don't care that she is hispanic. That is to say, it doesn't matter to me. I don't think race has anything to do with anything in this current situation. She just happens to be a damn good actress.

The point is some people’s reactions here is as if this is another case of ‘yay diversity yay for poc yay non-traditional casting’ when really it seems rather traditional to me. I cant see how this is helping forward the ‘poc’ cause. Though perhaps it is a different context in the US and people do look at many latinx different than white people. Personally I can barely distinguish. Chita is white to me. So is Lin. So is Lindsay.

That's basically my reaction. If people need to take it as a "yay diveristy, yay POC, yay Latinx, etc" that's totally cool, go for it. But to me, her casting seems traditional and makes sense, so maybe that's a good thing? That said I'm beyond excited to see this production.

#72

Lindsay Mendez to Play Carrie Pipperidge in CAROUSEL Revival?

barely anyone here was doing that. the reaction was mostly “yes we love Lindsey Mendez, we think this casting is great and she may be fantastic!”

qolbinau, yes, race is different here in America clearly.

Just so you know, many Latino/a people (i.e. my wife) would be pretty pissed off if you categorized them as "white." And yes, "Latino" involves like fifteen different countries, and some are look "white" and some don't, but many Mexican Americans do very much think of themselves as a different race than white people.

The bottom line is I think it is not only silly, but actually in most cases just plain wrong to disregard someone's heritage. Despite my cynicism about the producers' motives, Lindsay Mendez is a POC and even though Audra was too, it's a big deal (again, in a good way).

It's nice to see Lindsay in this. Yes, they get diversity points for having her, but I think it's a little disrespectful to suggest that, that's why she got the part. Betsy left the show because of a scheduling conflict with the workshop this fall (AKA Waitress). There's no other reason. Anyone that suggests otherwise has no basis. Betsy was not fired for being a white girl and Lindsay was not cast because she's Latina.
