Not sure what to make of announcing a closing date three months away.

If it is still running two weeks after the Tony nominations, it will close on July 2.

Thanks Kad, I hadn't realized it's been almost 2 years already
I honestly don't think the July 3rd date is their closing date, rather it is when they are selling tickets through. Mendez tweeted something along the lines "NOW is the time to see us!" And I tweeted Significant Other of July 3rd is their closing date and they said "we are in final performances. We are selling tickets through July 3rd."

...what does this even...what?

I am assuming they want to drum up business in the next few weeks with the press release saying they're selling tickets/closing/whatever and if that doesn't work out, they'll post an actual closing notice. It's a very strange way to go about things though.
Also, sorry, I meant July 2nd in the above posts!
I personally think they will be closing up shop at the end of this month. The wording is purposefully extremely vague - they are claiming "final performances" to see if it drums up any business. If it does, they'll stick around. If not, they, as they claim, are only "selling tickets through July 2nd," not "closing July 2nd." For these reasons, I believe the closing date will be much sooner, but not decided yet. It'll be a Tuck/Psycho/Disaster situation where they announce 7-10 days in advance and then end the run.
Edit: This has nothing to do with my feelings on the show...I truly think it's a remarkable and beautiful new play. I wish it only the best. But from a business and marketing standpoint, it's clear to me they're planning on closing sooner rather than later. Or else, they would be saying "We are closing July 2nd," not, "We are selling tickets until July 2nd."

I will be honestly super surprised if it limps to July. I saw the show and enjoyed it a lot, it hit a few nerves with me. That said the ticket sales have been awful; it can't be turning a profit. Given the small size of the booth, that theater should be easy to fill. But the rear Orchestra was empty and the mezz was less then half full , when I saw it in March. I was expecting a closing announcement, but figured the date would be sooner then July.
I find this all so strange. Even BWW's article reports "BWW has just learned that Significant Other is entering its final weeks on Broadway and tickets are on sale through July 2."
12 weeks to go is hardly deserving of a "final weeks" description. I have to agree with everyone here that they are attempting to fill some seats and if not, an earlier closing date is on the horizon. So so strange.

I don't know anything about the economics of this so this may be a naive question, but is there any possibility of a live stream right before it closes like She Loves Me or a recording for future release like Falsettos and Oh, Hello? I realize the shows I just named were always intended to be limited runs vs they weren't making money, but for those of us who'd like to see it but won't be able to, is there any chance of a renewed life for it on BroadwayHD, for example? Based on reviews I would have loved to see this but it can't happen. I realize they wouldn't (and shouldn't) announce it until right before closing but I'm just curious as to whether it's even a viable possibility.

Hearing they'll likely announce a closing for the end of the month.
I loved this show on and off broadway- i think it's problem is the audience it appeals to is not an audience with an income that allows one to pay top ticket prices for it. I was there Tues. and the orchestra wasn't full at all- the only other show I've seen less attended was Disaster!

I think its problem is that the lead is a self-absorbed, self-pitying whiner ---- one in a long line of them who have tried our patience from Bobby Baby on down: Ben Stone, George, Marvin, the feckless jerk in Once, etc. A dishonor roll, as it were.
A great many audience members do not wish to spend their time and money listening to self-absorbed, self-pitying whiners.
Personally, if I never see any of them or their ilk again, I will be ecstatic.

Heartbreaking but saw it coming. Hope it doesn't affect Glick's award chances.
Ack, guess that ends my decision on what to rush on Sunday... since this will be my last chance to see it. I thought I had until July, heh.
I just bought my tickets for the 22nd. I really hope Gideon gets nominated.

I just knew that was going to happen, right after they announced they were closing in July. Their numbers are horrible. They knew they couldn't last a few more months on Broadway.

I saw this off-Broadway, and while I don't remember it making too much of a profound impression on me, I think it will do very well regionally.
Such a shame. Saw it tonight for my 8th or 9th time. Wonderful performances all around with Gideon Glick giving a Tony Award winning performance. Lindsay Mendez is brilliant and 85 year old Barbara Barrie glorious. So nice tonight hearing applause on her entrance.
Bravo to all the producers for giving this play a shot. If you don't have a star or it's not from London, new plays don't seem to have a chance on Broadway these days. It will be interesting to see how Indecent and A Doll's House-Part 2 fair.
Wow!!!! I thought they stated July 2nd?
Hmmm.... I know April 23rd is also the last day for Sunday in the Park with George at the Hudson. Anyone think that show might extend and go back to the Booth after Significant Other closes?
