Hahaha, sorry Corine. If he didn't have that obscene voice, he wouldn't be famous. He's not a talented actor - he does everything the same and is beyond bland. Any actor that relies solely on cheap laughs doesn't garner much respect from me. Until I see him do something good, I'm not a fan.

how about instead of as edna put him in as corny collins

I would say keep him as Edna, I like that decision. The average movie going public would not accept a virtual unknown like Harvey Fierstein (with that crazy voice)in drag in a movie, I can't see it happening. With Travolta, they will make a SH*TLOAD of money.

"With Travolta, they will make a SH*TLOAD of money."
In the 7 weeks since it opened, "A Love Song for Bobby Long" has grossed $159,171, at its peak it was in 24 theaters.
"Ladder 49" did not even hit the $90 million mark in its worldwide release.
"The Punisher?" About $33 million.
"Domestic Disturbance?" $45 million on a production that cost $53 million.
"Swordfish" almost hit $70 million on an $80 million dollar production budget.
"Lucky Numbers." $10 million on a $65 million dollar production budget.
And, of course, "Battlefield Earth" cost $80 million to make, but made back ALMOST $21 and a half million.
That covers most of Mr. T's films in this decade. Perhaps, to paraphrase Lucy Ricardo, the money lost on each idividual Travolta movie is made up by volume.
Okay, fine - but when word gets out that he's playing a woman, I think that will spark some definite interest. Regardless, he will pull more people in than Harvey Fierstein.
Corine...believe it or not, many many many people do not know who Harvey is - I know my family didn't before I told them. None of my friends do.

"Okay, fine?" I showed you how the presence of Mr. Travolta has recently not only not guaranteed squatloads of money except in the "losing it" variety, and all you have is "Okay, fine?"
And in what universe do you live in that people who don't know who Harvey Fierstein is are going to rush out to see a straight actor (ha ha, sorry, that makes me laugh) in a dress?
If Marc is reading this. Harvey is the woman for the job. If you are going for star power then Robin Williams would be a more sensible option. Robin was great in drag in MRS DOUBTFIRE. He is also a mensch and hysterical. TRAVOLTA IS BETTER OFF as Corny Collins or maybe as Edna's husband. I like the idea of Robin as Edna and TRAVOLTA as her husband.
Why is it that whenever a piece of casting like this is announced, either a movie star playing a role on Broadway, or a movie star taking a stage role in a film, we all run around, wringing our hands, screaming and crying that it can't be so? Nine times out of ten, said movie star steps up to the plate and really delivers. Travolta has the musical theatre chops to do the role proud, and has always been an underrated actor. The more I think about it, the better a choice I think he is.
Namo: No need to get so bent out of shape. I meant "okay, fine" as if I had said "Okay, I see your point." However, all the movies that you mentioned were his particular bad ones - he's had huge box office success in earlier movies. Don't take it so personally, you sounded so offended.

I don't see Travolta as Edna. He has never felt the pain that is needed to portray that role. I can't see him in it. Robin Williams would be hysterical; and he can sing. I really think Williams would be a wonderful Edna. I also think Kevin Kline would make a wonderful Wilbur.

In my opinion to play a overweight teen or housewife you have to understand being teased etc. I just think of Travolta as a sex symbol, not jewish and it would be a stretch. Harvey had the role down, he made the role of Edna real. I think that Robin Williams would be a better option and he is more over the top. The role needs someone who is over the top. Robin would be that man, but Harvey is perfect even if he can't sing. His voice added to the part.
I have to agree with munk on this one- it really shouldn't matter whether the actor playing Edna has experience being teased or not. And hey, Travolta's heard plenty of crap about his weight.
No, the reason I don't like the idea of him playing Edna is that I just don't like him much as an actor. But that's just me- I know plenty of other people do like him.

Well. JT has never been an alien JT has never been President JT has never been a lawyer
Robin Williams knows more about being teased?
I agree with Magruder yet again. I love how people always jump and flail about when casting rumors circulate and then how badly they wind up eating crow afterwards.
I seem to remember a HORDE of complaints when CZJ, RZ and RG were cast in CHICAGO.. after the film came out, the very same people (some) were not only praising the casting, but also saying they knew all along they could do it.
Whoever is finally cast in the role, I am sure will do a great job. There. I've said it.
