Wow! Could it be that Mr. Opening Night himself, Munkustrap, is approximately nowhere near as connected and plugged-in as he has tried to make us believe???? Say it isn't so! He was such a role model for the gay children!
And seriously, Corine, I don't think they're likely to want to take Edna T in a septuagenarian direction.
ya know newyorkuniq makes a good point kiddies. Lets face it one of the reasons that Chicago was so successful was the "all star cast" aspect. compared to say Phantom
"Grease," the fourth revival of the season, is the worst show in the history of theater and represents an unparalleled assault on Western civilization and its values. - Michael Reidel
Why do you people refuse to acknowledge that Travolta's presence has NOT been guaranteeing asses in movie theater seats? In fact, since the year 2000, it has been guaranteeing the opposite.
I do think Travolta is a good actor. Those saying his name will get people to see the movie clearly don't know much about movies. Travolta's voice is fine and if he wants to do musicals than more power to him. But Edna is just not a role for him.
"Noah, someday we'll talk again. But there's things we'll never say. That sorrow deep inside you. It inside me, too. And it never go away. You be okay. You'll learn how to lose things..."
It's true that he's had a string of not very good and not very successful movies of late. Still, I do think that there would be an audience for him in a film where he sings and dances, even as an overweight housewife. Part of the success, I think, of the terrific Pulp Fiction and the rather lousy Michael, were those dance scenes that figured heavily in the coming attractions for both movies.
Not sure a person can be unheard of and washed up at the same time. BUT, if people stay away BECAUSE of the presence of a person (and some producers would argue was the common link in mr. travolta's stream of recent flops) then it could easily be argued that putting in no names and promoting the MOVIE instead of "X in Hairspray: The Musical" would pull in more people.
But you keep believing that somebody whose last several movies have hemmorhaged cash is a better bet than somebody nobody has ever heard of. Remember, the thing that was going to put asses in seats at A Chorus Line: The Movie, was the names. Your Landers Sister, your Michael Douglas.
Speaking of the Landers Sisters....Velma & Amber, maybe?

Okay, on the morning radio show I listen to, they were discussing this this morning - it's a mix station, not a group of Broadway experts by any means, but even they were saying it should be Harvey.

Personally, Im having a hard time *envisioning* John Travolta as a convincing woman, though I think its an interesting choice and Id love to see him attempt it. (maybe ill make a graphic! ha) It does say that this is just talks though, so it could be someone completely different by the time they settle on a cast.

That doesn't make and sense and was completely uncalled for. All I said was that I wasn't aware that there were gay rumours surrounding Travolta. I don't see that your point is.

Urgh- I think it should be Harvey, or at least not John Travolta.... Not that he's a bad actor, I just think he is not good for the role of Edna. Just my opinion. Maybe he could be great at the role.
