As a theatre lover who doesn't reside in New York (just yet), I've noticed recently that the majority of the traveling I do is motivated by a desire to see certain shows. While nine times out of ten this equates to making trips to the city, I thought it might be fun to expand my horizons by attempting to visit and see shows at all of the regional companies who have been recipients of the Regional Theatre Tony Award.
Out of the 40 winners, I have been to 6: Arena Stage, American Repertory Theater, Hartford Stage, Goodspeed Opera House, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and Cleveland Play House. I'm hoping to knock a few more off this summer when I visit Chicago to see War Paint. Out of the companies I've listed, one of my favorites has to be Cleveland Play House. They staged a spellbinding production of The Crucible in the round last fall that was one of my favorite productions of 2015. As a company, I also admire CPH for their ability to engage more diverse audiences than the ones I've encountered through other theatergoing experiences.
My questions for all of you are: How many off of the list have you visited? Which ones were your favorites, and what did you see there? And needless to say, this list does not account for all of the wonderful regional work that is being done around the country. What additions would you like to see to it?
