If LCT had half the moxie or sense of humor of Hal Prince they would pit that ladybug quote not only in the pull quotes but on teeshirts in the lobby.
The ladybug reference went over my head. Can someone explain?
Yes I did. Was he just saying he was looking up at the ceiling and noticed a ladybug? As if the show just wasn't keeping his attention?
It was more an analogy to how well (or really, not well) they keep VERGE focussed.
Pretty much that he seems to think it's unfocused, way too busy, and scatter-brained. And that the actors (which he describes as disengaged and preoccupied) "can't keep their mind on the show, so why should we"?

Thanks. So I pretty much got it when I read it but I thought that I was missing a reference also.
Jesus...even Word of Mouth didn't like it.
Word of Mouth has some of the dumbest reviewers ever.
I really wish the show would have gotten better reviews. I may be seeing it January. I am still dying to see it no matter what the review say.
Ok, I just lost brain cells watching that Word of Mouth review.
I read that the show sticks pretty close to the movie (Which I have not seen). It seems that this is one movie that doesn't transfer well to the stage. And sometimes it drives me crazy when a show based on a movie isn't as close to the movie or book.
I think the picture accompanying the Times review justifies any and all production costs.
Well, the Post is relatively positive! Three stars out of four.
NY Post review
no way now that i will sit through this show - broadway, you dissapoint me
the buzz as bad from the start although the reviews only served to underscore what the peeps on this board were saying.
i think i need to change my avatar to a ladybug on a ceiling...
but between this AND Spider Man delaying previews yet again - what gives (i do have a bee in my bonnet this time...)
I guess lesson learned - dont buy theater tickets full price until one reads the messages boards and dont plan travel around a show - youre bound to get burned
i am now stuck with seeing one of the first previews of Spider Man...
i'm so mad i'm going to only rANDomly capitalize SoMe letters. that'Ll show you! take that Spider Man. i'Ve learned my lEsson.

Wait, so..you haven't seen the show but you're disappointed? You seem like you're "scolding" Broadway for having a show that got negative reviews. Shows getting poor critical reception has been happening since theater was created.

This could not be farther from the truth. For multiple reasons that I won't even get into.
i am now stuck with seeing one of the first previews of Spider Man...
What do you mean "stuck"? No one has even seen the show. No one. For all we know it could actually be really fantastic. And you're complaining about being "stuck" with seeing a Broadway show, something many, many people don't get to experience once in their lives. Count yourself lucky!
Why don't you (call me crazy!) see the show(s) for yourself and THEN judge.

Entertainment Weekly is very negative with a D+.
Review
From the Washington Post:
...
"The production's other skilled practitioners include book writer Jeffrey Lane and composer-lyricist David Yazbek, who previously collaborated on the musical adaptation of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels." That was firmer footing for them. Neither demonstrates much of a feel for Almodóvar's Madrid, which is mostly conjured by endless repetition of the word "gazpacho." (And can someone tell me why Spanish characters would talk to one another in bad Spanish accents?) They also evince little synchronicity here with the film director's operatic women, who are supposed to come across as buoyant creations, even when they're in pain."

Broadway's 'Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown' lacks an edge
From Bloomberg:
"Heroic efforts from the remarkable singing actresses Laura Benanti, Patti LuPone and Sherie Rene Scott and the equally accomplished Brian Stokes Mitchell can’t disguise the fact that “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” is an unholy mess."
...
"But the chief culprits are Lane’s scattershot book and Yazbek’s ho-hum songs, not one of them memorable. "

What's interesting to me is that basically all of the critics took shots at Lane's book, but Yazbek's score was more like 50/50. I personally love the score, but I agree that the book needs a LOT of work.

Of course they sent John Simon.

Based on these reviews, I'd say some significant improvements have been made since I saw the show last week.
God it was only a week ago. It feels like an eternity. Much like the show did...
StageGrade gives it a cumulative grade of D+.
Too bad. Still excited to see it in December. I'm interested to see how it will sell...
