Wanda Sykes to play Miss Hannigan?

It just seems random. I'm not sure many have thought of her for that role before.
She wouldn't be the first black Hannigan.

I have no problem that she's black, but I've only ever seen her AS Wanda Sykes.....no matter what she's been in.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Yeah, don't really see the problem. She's a riot, I love her in her recurring role in CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, I think she'd be hilarious in something like this.
MichaelBennett, couldn't agree more with you, though I'd also add Rosie O'Donnell to that list.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

Exactly. And I find her shtick very funny.

The only thing that is sort of odd is that she's doing the show at a pretty unspectacular theatre in PA. Maybe her way of expressing interest in the revival?...

Wanda playing Hannigan as Wanda is ok in my book.

Thought she was great in Monster in Law.

This just demonstrates to me that Wanda is willing to work on her craft, start in smaller venues, and not just expecting to be cast as a Broadway lead. I have even more respect for her now.

Plus, I think she will tear up any role she plays. She has funny in her bones and that voice just puts me in stitches.

I'll be driving to PA for this.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Who CARES why she agreed to do the show at this "smaller" venue. I'm ashamed at all of you who think this announcement is due of negative criticism.

Kudos to her -- a D-list star who nonetheless is a person of national fame -- for doing the show at this considerably unknown theater. It will bring in a new audience which otherwise would have never known about the Media Theatre.

Who knows why she is doing it. Perhaps she is vying for the role on Broadway. Perhaps she didn't know the theater was not of high-profile. Perhaps she was offered a bucket of money. Perhaps she performed there as a little girl and wants to return to her roots. It doesn't matter.

Judge her performance after you see it. I, for one, am happy that the theater was able to book a name and get it's own name in the press.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Who cares?

*raises hand*

I do. I'm really curious why she made this choice. I'm sure she could get better paying of stand-up gigs. I doubt they are paying all that much money.

And of all things... ANNIE? Is she testing the musical theatre waters for potential career opportunities? Does she owe someone a favor? She being blackmailed? Is she doing it so her kids can see her in something family friendly? Where the offers not coming since her fox show got canceled? Has she been a closet showtune geek all this time?

I'm definitely curious.

Ah.. I think she and her wife do live in Media, PA.

An act of community involvement. That makes sense.

D-List? Sweetie, what a small myopic world you live in.

I love her! And was really surprised/curious about this as well. Whatever reason she's doing it, I'll be driving out to see it.

amoni -- Wanda Sykes is just as much of a household name as Kathy Griffin, no?

Love Wanda, and have always wanted to see her in a musical. A role in one of our office's pieces is perfect for her. Will be interesting to see how well she can sing, not that Hannigan is a very big vocal role.
