We Really Do Need a CAMELOT Revival

Since it closed in 1963, this show has never really had a successful revival. I think it's one of the greatest musicals of all time and I've always dreamed of seeing a full scale production on Broadway. With Laura Benanti, maybe?

I really enjoyed the tour with Lou Diamond Phillips but I think I was in the minority on that one. I wish they would have recorded a cast album though. The new arrangement of "Lusty Month of May" was a lot of fun. I can't imagine why Bartlett Sher hasn't gotten around to this one yet.

Yup, agreed, and I'd be interested to see a number of directors' flairs to appropriately bring it into the 21st century. Bartlett Sher is the first that comes to mind, but Diane Paulus might also be interesting. Laura Benanti at the lead for sure, please.

Yesss. I've never seen a production of it on any level, but the cast recording is one of my favorites. Absolutely gorgeous. Why hasn't this happened? Laura Benanti would be a dream, she has the voice and the comedic chops.

Camelot is my all-time favorite musical. I hope it eventually is revived on broadway!

I've always wanted to see this back on Broadway, but to date the only live production I've seen was my own high school production back in '72 (I was a stellar Tom of Warwick.)

Two reservations: a barebones one-set orchestra-onstage mounting would be a huge disservice to this show; and would the mobs filling WICKED, MORMON and HAMILTON have any interest in this fusty warhorse?

This is actually EXACTLY the show for Jake Gyllenhaal.

There was a really marvelous production at a larger regional theater here in Chicago a few years ago that took the fairytale-type sets and costumes and replaced them with Game of Thrones-type sets and costumes... so... like... darker fairy-tales, I guess. Lots of beards and a little nudity. Anyway... that sounded horrible on paper to me... but it worked surprisingly well. Christy Altomare played Guenevere and her singing was very belt-y... another thing that sounded terrible on paper that worked quite nicely. It was thrilling and I loved it.

Didn't I see a revival in the 70s at Lincoln Center with Richard Burton?  I remember being late because they moved up the start time because it was opening night.

I agree that it's time to revive CAMELOT.  But please,no re-writing of Lerner.  Not another revisal like CLEAR DAY or GIGI.  The show's not perfect but its story, alas, certainly still resonates today.

I remember seeing this production! The only quibble I had was the excessive use of fog! I was in the third row and I remember just being barricaded by fog at every scene transition.

Yes. Yes, we do! After seeing the wonderfully inventive production at Two Rivers Theater in Red Bank two years ago, and a production helmed by Robert Sean Leonard at the Westport Country Playhouse last month, I would really love to see a really big revival in New York one day soon. The material is timeless, the songs are an absolute delight. What could be better?

Yes, please!  It's a timeless story and the musical score is great.

 

I still have the CD with Burton/Andrews/Goulet and the DVD of the movie with  Harris/Redgrave/Nero.

Someone as manly and charismatic as Richard Burton for the role of Arthur! He did inspire a band of men towards the ideals of the Round Table!

This is one musical that I have never been able to get into, despite trying several times. I have never seen a live production, but have sat through the movie and both TV iterations multiple times.

The show has a few good tunes, but it also has many clunkers, and the book moves very slowly. If it did get a revival, it would have to be in the hands of a great director and a company like Lincoln Center.

It is a show that I want to like, but I feel it needed more work when the authors were still alive.

I think a mixed race Camelot would be pretty incredible. But I do agree, the story/show is kind of boring...
