broadwayguy2 LOVES Rent and has many very fond memories of seeing the broadway company during it's eary days. broadwayguy feels that the show has fallen into a state of disaray with clumsy, lazy, though energentic.. if that makes sense performances, and casting has become lazy as well, rarely seeking out fresh new talent like the likes of anthony here, simone, sherie scott, michael mcelroy, the goddess shayna steele, jim poulos, et al... and now relies on the likes of people like matt caplan for years at a time who goof around OPENLY onstage during even serious scenes, much to the strange delight of rentheads and chagrin of other theatre goers and who seem more concerned about being out of character and going for a laugh rather than telling the story, whic can be VERY powerful when performed well. when teh cast goofs off for 2.5 hours, what you have is nota powerful story, but one hell of a hokey evening that demands a refund. i love rent, i am saddened by the lackluster state that it is in and feel it needs a majoy les miz-like overhaul.
broadwayguy2 greatlya ppreciates anthony rapp's participation here at broadwayworld.com, but refesus to treat anthony as though he is now doing a permanent interview. broadwayguy2 is all up for discourse and discussion and the like with anthony, but refuses to behave like a fan given a licenese to grill him with questions.

Apprehensions or fears? Hmmmm... I just hope that all of our good intentions are realized in a good movie.
As for my approach, I'm not one to predetermine too much. I imagine new aspects of Mark will come forth, just because I'm a different person now than I was when I first played the role. But I think the basic essence will be there.
Ways to annoy people:
Arrive at a meeting late, say you're sorry, but you didn't have time for lunch, and you're going to be nibbling during the meeting. Then eat raw potatoes.
Ask people what gender they are,or
Disagree strongly with everything anybody says:)
anthony, you and i seem to have the same sleep-habits. hahahaha
as far as predeterming, i agree.. it's much more natural t not predetermine and to get in there and just let things flow through during the creative process.. and much more rewarding as well.
Thanks Bwayguy for your kind words and everything. I appreciate your outrage at the messiness you've seen onstage. Part of the reason I'm reluctant to go to see the show is the fact that I never know what I'm going to get, and your posts confirm that for now, at least, I'm making the right decision.
Sorry to hear about Matt, who was good when I saw him a long time ago...
hey anthony do you ever listen to yourself on the rent cast recording for fun?

i too, am relucant to return to the nederlander until i see amajor change in the cast list. i will say, however, that merle dandridge, the current joanne, is a force to reconed with. she is stunning is every way.
i saw matt when he first joined the benny tour and i adored him.. last time i saw him however, you could tell that he was bored with teh show, only showed up for the paycheck, and is now looking for any and every way to amuse himself and the gagles of rentheads in rows on and two who have overdrawn banka ccounts from seeing the show too often.
side note -- unlike some posters, broadwayguy2 will never brown nose. it gets you nowhere and nothing except sore knees and a brown nose. i would much rather state my honest opinion about people, shows, etc and earn respect for being honest. whether i am liked or disliked by some people for it, at least i will get respect for it.
I hope you'll be catching the current tour soon (although with your schedule, I'm sure it's unlikely). The cast is really into the show, and their energy and talent is palpable. I was really disappointed after seeing RENT for the first time in NYC in April 2004 after listening to the OBC and watching clips of it since '98. I was left thinking that maybe this Rent thing isn't all I thought it would be. But the current tour cast seems to really "get" the show, and even their weakest link is still stronger than the stongest link of the Bway cast, at least when I saw them.
I had my apprehensions about casting the OBC in the movie, and to be honest, I still do, but at least I know that the spirit and heart of the show will still be there, which is more than I can say about the current NY production.

I don't tend to listen to the recording, no. I hear too many flaws in it to really enjoy it fully. I appreciate that it exists, and that people love it, but I wish other choices had been made in the mixing process.
by the way, I feel SO bad that you guys had to kick off the little shop tour in dallas. that theatre is NOTORIOUS for being difficult on sound systems.. what a way to kick it off....
The Dallas theatre was a major pain in the ass, although the audiences seemed to enjoy themselves regardless.
By the way, since you all know more about me than I know about you, tell me a little bit about yourselves: age, where you live, what you do, etc etc. It's only fair, don't you think?

Sure, why not. Seems only fair since according to BwayGuy2, I've taken it upon myself to interrogate you like a good fangirl should.
Age - In my twenties Where I live - Vancouver, British Columbia What I do - Immigration Officer at the airport, production assistant in film and TV, rock climbing instructor, theatre journalist for a local paper, Criminology student (the officer, journalist and criminologist aspects are where I get the pathological nosiness and constant barrage of questions from. I'm sorry.).

Just joined in this thread now, though I should go to bed. It's nice you want to know about us. Well I'm 28 years old living in Louisville, Ky for the time being, working as a waiter at a restraunt. I hope to move to New York within the year to try my hand at broadway, since I was a theater major in college.. Actually it was shows like Rent that made me definetally want to prusue acting and singing. That's about it. Thanks for asking. I'm going to bed, like I should of hours ago, but I just had to read your posts. Take care and post often! Lara
Anthony- (don't you feel like you're at a press conference? )
I'm interested to hear how you feel about the ages of the cast of the "Rent" film. Obviously, the Original Broadway Cast members that are reprising their roles are extremely talented individuals who undoubtedly know the characters more intimately than anyone else; however, "Rent" is undeniably a show about youth- the hopes and tragedies associated with young individuals finding themselves in New York City during a very specific time period. You've noted elsewhere that you (as well as the rest of the returning cast members) have matured a great deal as a performer. Do you think that the casting of older individuals in the film roles will diminish that particular aspect of the show? Do you think that the film will be more mature than the stage production? Or do you think that your maturity as a performer will help you recapture the youthful spirit that drives the show? (And I'm NOT talking about the immature, depthless performances currently gracing the Nederlander stage night after night... )
Disclaimer: I know you're not going to take offense, but I just thought that I should mention for the record that you are not, in any sense of the word, old.
"Goodness is rewarded. Hope is guaranteed. Laughter builds strong bones. Right will intercede. Things you've said I often find I need, indeed. I see the world through your eyes. broadwayguy2 was very lucky and had family friends who would take him on trips to nyc to see shows and national tours and such while growing up... i was last in the city back in may when a family friend gave me a one week trip for my birthday...
Vancouver really is a spectacular city. I'd love to relocate to NYC in the next few years, hopefully as an articling law student. I love the rude people, the culture, the fast pace, the shows, the restaurants, the shopping...everything. But Vancouver really is great.
As for how I have time for everything...I do my Criminology work full time, I used to do immigration full time but on top of my criminology commitments, it was too much on my plate so that's part time. And I do production assisting work on my weekends and my off days. And I do rockclimbing instruction in my spare time, if that ever happens.
In light of that, I think a lot of people are now wondering how I manage to spend so much time on this board. LOL
Pictures? We'll see. I've got 8 more pounds to go on this Atkins diet, then we'll talk about putting up some pictures. LOL
