I hope she does another movie or something. It would be great to see screenplay writers write a movie which would have to have Nikki play the lead. It would be neat if she did a CD doing her own version of Broadway hits!! lol.

I think she should join the Broadway cast!
Let's allow her to ride the wave of the movie first!
I agree, she'd be wonderful on Broadway, but we know we won't see anyone from the movie cast in the stage production.
an ABC Family Network movie like Marissa Jarret Winoker?
I'd hate to see her headlining Hairspray on stage anytime soon...or ever because that might mean she's exhausted her possibilities. One Jennifer Holliday is enough. I hope the film is a stepping stone to a long and interesting career on film, tv and stage for her. She's so talented and seems like a doll!
There won't be a next. She will take the Marissa career track and disappear quickly. She was adorable in the movie, but I don't see a big career for her.
whaaaat? I think she'll have a huge career.
I think once the film dies down a bit she should try to make some off beat choices and not head the traditional root (IE like Marissa.) If she plays her cards right she could have a marvelous broadway career, but its a little too early in the game to think of what she'll do next.
"She will take the Marissa career track and disappear quickly"
Marissa had a leading role in the sitcom "Stacked" and filmed a few TV movies, that's not disappearing to me.
WORLD DOMINATION!
Hell, she'd have my vote. :3

Luckily Nikki is far younger than Marissa was when she did the show. I think Nikki will wind up in sit-coms as a supporting role.
As for the Broadway Show.. though fantastic in the movie, we have no idea what he stage abilities are.. can she dance a 2.5 hour show 8 times a week? Film and stage are 2 different beasts.
I also know that if I were Nikki I would be putting my money in the bank right now and saving - I wouldn't bet on a future career yet. She looks like the type who may be unfairly typecast way too quickly in our "looks matter more than talent" world. Yeah I know I'm very good with little sayings to make a point. :-P
Don't get me wrong, I hope to see her have a tremendous future - she is so cute and so talented and just 100% lovely. But unfortunately, that doesn't mean anything. I can only hope she and her agent make the right choices.
And personally, I would rather see her vanish than become a supporting role on a sitcom. She is too talented for something like that.

So Megan Mullally should have vanished instead of playing a supporting role on a sitcom?
Megan Mullally had already nutured her roots on Broadway prior to WILL & GRACE, so she HAS something to fall back on. The HAIRSPRAY film is Nikki's very first professional acting job. 2nd job it seems as Coldstone Creamery was her first.
I don't think Stacked and a few forgettable TV movies make a long lasting career. Marissa is way off the radar in every medium and my belief is that Nikki will follow that path. Even Rikki Lake has been reduced to solo cameo appearance in the movie. What else is she doing?? I am not being cruel, just realistic. I enjoyed Marissa on Broadway and Nikki in the movie - unfortunately while the stout in the movie get their time as "stars" on TV, that same is not true in reality. Just stating the obvious based on what we see in the movies and on TV. I don't see long lasting careers for Nikki without an image change. Call me shallow if you want, I am just being realistic.

So Ricki Lake had no career after HAIRSPRAY? Are you for real?
Ricki was not "reduced" to a cameo in the film.. it was a sweet nod to the original film.
I totally agree on Nikki's limitations. The same limitations Marissa Jaret Winokur has encountered.
For what's it's worth -- after seeing the new film yesterday, I found that it was fully John Travolta's film. At least at MY viewing. Nikki started the film; kept it pumping; by the time the film reached it's midway mark, John Travolta stole it from everyone. I was totally surprised how much they expanded Edna for him AND he worked his scenes to sheer perfection. His Edna is totally his own -- as was Divine's and Harvey's.
By the time the end of the film came, you really didn't notice Nikki anymore -- it was all about Edna/John. Edna's little dance-off during "You Can't Stop the Beat" was the pay-off her audience needed. Total genius!
Nikki is adorable, charismatic but doesn't have the powerful screen presence that Jennifer Hudson is blessed with. Jennifer dominates photos, TV appearances and on the big screen. Nikki doesn't -- she just blends with everyone. Just watch her on Friday's Today Show appearance or any of her red carpet interviews.

She should get into a fight with Larry David like Marissa did on an episode of CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM.
Flaunt It you can't possibly compare Megan Mullally's sitcom success (phenomenal beyond belief...not to mention fluke as Karen Walker was not meant to be such a heavily shown character) to Winokur's terrible, thankless role on that awful sitcom she got on.
And you know very well that that was what I meant. If she got a pilot as consequential to TV history as Will & Grace I might change my tune, but I'm talking overall likelihood here.

When she gets a lil older- a "Mama" Cass Eliott biopic.
It could be stunning.

Rudy, no one KNOWS what a small part on a sitcom can lead to. No one knew 'Will and Grace' would take off.. no one knew Karen would be what she was.. look at the pilot episode and Karen was FAR different than what the character became. Why wish she vanish rather than try? I don't get that.
Rikki made a movie with Shirley Maclaine, did a TV movie about a fat girl pining for a hot stud and then did a talk show for a number of years. Let me know if I am missing anything, but I don't expect there to be a book anytime soon detailing the The Films and Career of Rikki Lake.

Well aside from bing a regular on "China Beach" .. other film highlights are Cry Baby... Serial Mom ... her well received documentary "The Business of Having Babies" that just showed at the Tribecca Film Festival. Would you like more? Let me know where you want it?
She certainly did MUCH better than the far more marketable "Link" from the original film. Imagine that.

Sorry, forgot the two John Water's movies. When was she last in something that wasn't tied to her good friend John? How many scripts does she get from producers that aren't makeing a John Water's movie? Guess we are going to have to agree to disagree. Rikki Lake's career at present is DOA.

Her name is Ricki. You may think she has a dead career, but you can harly call a 15 year stint at the top of the business (including 11 years of her own top rated talkshow) DOA.
She is still working, having recenly had a baby, not so much, but she has started filming a new movie, "A Very Lucky Girl" She just shot a pilot "The Middle." I just don't see her career as dead as you imagine. She is not a superstar.. but she is not going to be on the surreal life any time soon.
