A network will never do a multi-million dollar television broadcast of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS.

The problem with a live audience is that they don't have as tight a control over timing. Applause, laughter, etc all add to the running time of the show. And local markets can get cranky if Ted and Dolores have to start the evening news 10 minutes late.
Also they don't have control over what bleeds through from the audience reaction. "Slap her Willona" comes to mind.

"SNL seems to manage."
Except when a singing artist lip synchs, gets the wrong track cued up, dances a jig, walks off stage and then blames it on acid reflux.
Mame has some very well known songs.
We Need A Little Christmas is a holiday classic.
And Open a New Window is one of those songs that people hear and go "oh yea, I know that song".
If they market it with a big name and sell the songs on the commercials I think it would be very popular.

Phyllis, SNL has to cut skits during live broadcasts if they are ever running over (SNAFU could speak more to this). That is how they are able to accommodate and adapt. A broadcast of a musical this size would not have that luxury.

Doesn't Mame swear a lot in the show? One misplaced "damn" and Lisa Welchel will cancel the whole project.
It's Today Goddammit!!!
I'm not getting the Lisa Whelchel references, is she like against musical theater?
Lisa Whelchel has played Peter Pan a few times in stock. Are you saying this is the reason why NBC is going to choose it for the next broadcast?
Mary Poppins.
@NYadgal I'd love to see a Sam Barks Mary Poppins.
Interesting!

It'll be something like Cinderella, Annie, Peter Pan, or The Wizard of Oz. I would add Mary Poppins, but NBC wouldn't do it since it belongs to Disney and therefore will be on ABC. Trust me, no one on my Twitter timeline will be hype over a property like Mame or South Pacific. People watched TSOM because 1. It's The Sound of Music. It's popular everywhere, and 2. It was Carrie Underwood in TSOM. The average person can't tell you what My Fair Lady, Carousel, or maybe even Oliver! is about. Even if they didn't know what TSOM was about, people know the songs because they have been so embedded into popular culture. Heck, most people didn't even know until last Thursday that Sound of Music was a stage show before the movie. I really underestimated the public's knowledge of Broadway. Last week's live performance really taught me a lesson.

You don't remember that Lisa Welchel had her family kneel in prayer when Janet Jackson had a costume malfunction at the Superbowl? You haven't seen a slipped tit since then have you? Lisa has power!

Unfortunately we don't have The Ed Sullivan Show to introduce America to the Broadway shows.
Another one I'd like to see is "Babes In Arms". The music is nice even though there really isn't a plot.
It's definitely going to be Grease.

"It's definitely going to be Grease."
Did they hire you to make the lyrics to "Greased Lightning" and "Look At Me I'm Sandra Dee" more family friendly?

They already have, at least in the case of Greased Lighting.
I'm not as familiar with the older musicals like King and I and Mame so I'm gonna be a little more recent. I would LOVE to see them do How To Succeed with Danielle Radclife. This would get huge ratings and the show has some great numbers. Also, Anything Goes would be amazing. I don't know who they would cast though.

You mean those pitiful Glee lyrics?
With a four speed on the floor they'll be waiting at the door
You know that ain't no crap we'll be getting lots of that
I do know after SOM, which is the most licensed musical in the United States, Grease is one of the next highest if not the second highest.
I'm sure NBC isn't going to do a Disney show, because of the Disney/ABC partnership (or rather ownership). As much as one of their recent musicals like Poppins or Beauty and the Beast would fit the bill nicely, it won't happen.
Neither will The Wizard of Oz, unless it is a joint venture with Warner Bros. and Ted Turner, who own the rights to the MGM film (and script and music).
I hope they do THE WIZ.
That could work well with the right concept and cast. I think enough people know the songs, and if you star-cast the leads ... it could draw big numbers. Unless the network(s) are afraid of a $9 million all-black musical. I hate to even say that in 2013, but viewer demographics definitely play into decisions like that.
