The publicity to stunt cast Teen Angel will be enough to follow the same live event formula, regardless of who Sandy and Danny will be. And the changes in Grease between movie and stage are no more or less than SOM. NBC even marketed SOM Live as "the stage version" as one of its features.
"I do know after SOM, which is the most licensed musical in the United States, Grease is one of the next highest if not the second highest."
I thought "Oklahoma!" was up there in that category. (I thought it might be second in fact.)
I highly doubt they'll do "Grease". I bet they'll do something more family friendly (there are an awful lot of references to sex in that show). (I think "Oliver!" could be a safe bet.)

The original book for Grease is pretty raunchy for network TV. It would probably get a TV 14 rating.

GREASE would never get a TV-G rating.

Katy Perry in Anything Goes. She has done VO work so at least we know her vocal acting would sound good.
Like Sound of Music, I hope they can try to give us musicals that have never been filmed in its original stage form. That was the most important part of the whole thing for me.
The Secret Garden, please, please.
I totally forgot about this but it would definitely fit in with the family friendly aspect: You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown"
The Music Man
Seth MacFarlane and Jessie Mueller.

Yeah, in the damn Smurfs movies!
How about Scrooge? You'd have to have two actors playing young and old Ebenezer. But it's a terrific, under appreciated show. Definitely family friendly.
If they were to do THE WIZ on tv today, I think they would like do a multiethnic casting.
"The Music Man

YES.
There is no reason why they can't do a PG version of Grease. It doesn't have to be the original lyrics or book. They've been doing that show in schools for decades now.
GREASE would definitely score the highest ratings of any ideas that are being tossed around.
MB, I heard it on the nightly news (NBC) tonight that they were "seriously considering" Peter Pan, just as you said.
EDIT: Of course, they probably used this thread as their source. LOL
Even though it will never happen, I think 1776 would be cool since American independence stuff is having a serious moment right now, between Sleepy Hollow and AMC's upcoming Revolutionary War drama.
My Fair Lady or The Music Man are both safe choices.

i remember thinking when the Encores! GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES CD came out that it could make a great TV musical. The movie is vastly different from the original stage play, and they could play the same "it's not the movie" angle as the SOUND OF MUSIC. Unfortunatley they'd never cast Megan Hilty as Lorelei, but they could easily cast huge stars in the leads, although there may be a similar Star/Marilyn situation as there was for Carrie/Julie Andrews.
Of course, it has the same lack of appeal to the "under 18 crowd" as MAME or DOLLY and despite one phenomenally popular song it's largely an unknown score as originally presented.
If it were up to me it would be HIGH SPIRITS, but obviously that would never happen. There's nothing like a black comedy about a seance for the holidays! With an ode to ouji boards!

In my head.

A CHRISTMAS STORY: The Musical. Preferably with the same cast that is currently touring.

Might the producers think that a live airing of A CHRISTMAS STORY at the beginning of December could hurt ticket sales if it plans to come back next winter?
I'm not a huge fan of the very family friendly shows, so GREASE would actually be a pretty cool choice.

I think Dreamgirls could attract a lot of attention. It's not incredibly family-friendly but if they cast some stars in it I believe it could be pretty successful.
