Last night's success would be hard to duplicate. Carrie Underwood is huge right now and SOM is probably the most household-name musical in the world. In many ways, it's not a surprise at all that it did well, ratings wise.
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

I think the best choice would be Big River.
My second choice would be Oliver.

On a side not; I just want to thank these two men for all they have done for theatre over the past twenty or so years.

"Imagine if they did Fiddler with Mandy Patinkin"
I'd like to see a nice production of Fiddler, but Mandy Patinkin would play Tevye like Norma Desmond. While he's demonstrated he can act on tv, his over emoting singing would look freakish on tv.

I think the best choice would be Big River.
I would be among the dozens tuning in excitedly, that's for sure.
I think another R&H musical would be the best bet, but I can't think of one that has the same cache as The Sound of Music that hasn't recently had a TV adaptation/showing. Someone on ATC suggested that Annie Get Your Gun would've been a good fit for Carrie Underwood and I have to agree with that.

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

What would really blow the ratings for years to come is Daniel Radcliffe doing "How To Succeed In Business..."
Jon Hamm as Biggley and Megan Hilty as Rosemary.

I would also love Big River, but I don't think it's well known enough.
Oliver is a good choice, but there's really only one female character and I can't think of any 10 year old boys who would be a ratings draw like Underwood.
Hello Dolly seems like a safe choice.
ETA - Goth, that's a great idea. I would LOVE to see Radcliffe do HTS live.

It will be Evita with Taylor Swift. Matt Mitovich from tvline said that would be for May sweeps on twitter.

How about they close Wicked on Broadway now and do it next year? Now would Carrie Underwood make a better Elphaba or Glinda?

I think if they marketed Big River properly people would tune in. Especially if they ramped up the star wattage and geared it toward the younger generation.
One of the Jonas brothers as Huck, Sean "P Diddy" Combs as Jim, Katy Perry as Mary Jane, Bob Dylan as Pap
I think since Big River has a lot of smaller roles, you could get some nervous stars comfortable with the idea of live musical theater.

MAME with Meryl Streep.
I meant that as a joke, but, uhm, hmmmmm.

While I would like to see nice productions of "Mame" and "Hello Dolly" I wonder if the younger generation is going to tune in and see old ladies.
I think part of the mission of these live tv broadcasts should be to draw in the younger generation.

I, too, was thinking HOW TO SUCCEED with Radcliffe.
I would also love a BIG RIVER...but an actual river might present logistical challenges in a studio...and don't they say 'n*' several times?

During the opening number last night I thought, "Into the Woods would look great in this kind of environment." Then I remembered it's a hair darker than SOM.
Now I think Punchdrunk should do Into the Woods.

The river is a problem but I think a creative set designer could do it.
I think every aging hippie in the world would tune in to see Bob Dylan sing: "Dad gum guv'mint, you sorry so and so's."
And their grandchildren would tune in to see one of the Jonas Brothers.

While Hugh Laurie in MFL is great, they need a star for Eliza and it can't be any of these pop princesses. Eliza has to be a legit soprano.
