A shame he did it all at thirty-six.
He was just a backstreet boy, hustling and fighting, scratching and biting..."
You are amazing. When I read this thread title, I had a vision of Lin, alone in a room, clutching his Tony singing "You Must Love Me."

I have little doubt that Miranda will be prolific (like Sondheim), and that makes me happy. I think that Miranda is in a position though, that's unlike any other creative in musical theater history because of what's happened with Hamilton. So far, Miranda is incomparable.
The show has won every award possible (including the Pulitzer). In terms of "most Tonys", the only show that has surpassed his is The Producers. Mel Brooks has yet to equal his own success (although, to be fair, Brooks' primary focus has always been comedy, not writing scores for musical theater).
Other musical theater creatives have been awarded like Miranda, but not to the extent of winning almost everything possible, in a single season, for one show. Beyond the awards, Hamilton did something no musical has ever done. It influenced a tangible part of American history, or at least temporarily stayed the course. When you look at a $10 bill, you will not see the face of Harriet Tubman because of the musical Hamilton. That influence, as well as the intangible influences and results of re-designing the physical faces of American historical figures, is what makes Miranda and Hamilton incomparable to my mind.
Beyond being prolific (which is hopefully a given), what direction can any creative go after all that, and what effect will it have on how anything he writes in the future will be viewed? It's interesting for me to read the opinions regarding 'another historical show' and even the humorous reference to Evita because those are thoughts that cross my mind, too.

If there was a Sound Design Tony, I'm pretty sure Hamilton would have tied the Producers too!

I really worry that Miranda's work won't have the timelessness of Sondheim's works. I'm not sure that his hip hop scores will register with future audiences. His scores are sprinkled with modern phrases and musical styles that may be jarring for audiences in 2030.

Why worry? Lots of artists aren't seen during their time for their artistry, LMM gets to enjoy it!

you've said this before and I just think it's untrue. Hip hop will not have disappeared in 14 years. it's been around for a long time now and I doubt it's going anywhere anytime soon.

Oh my God, imagine if he could make Smash (the creative process/backstage experience of a musical as a TV show) work.
Personally, I'm hoping for a collaboration with Alan Menken but he should do whatever makes him happy.
Nice one, Mister Matt.

I thought this was a thread about Miranda Sings.
Lin is blessed. He has nothing left to prove. He's accomplished so much and proven himself he can continue to write from the heart and follow his muse. Like Sondheim, he will have some flops, some critical but not financial successes, some hits. He can focus on acting if he chooses He's made the theatre history books already. I'm so happy for him. The world is his oyster.

Into hibernation for a while. He looks like he can use a long rest.

Hopefully he'll take a vacation!
He's never going to top Hamilton so hopefully he won't try. He can do whatever he wants to from now on, he's pretty much set for life, so he'll just pursue the subjects that interest him. The next show probably won't look anything like Hamilton.
