No they don't. The featured actor singled out from THE COLOR PURPLE doesn't even deserve a nomination. Lisa Kron doesn't deserve it either, and i'll venture to say the same for Chita.

"maybe Jersey Boys which I enjoyed but I really don't want a jukebox musical to ever win."
So just because it's a jukebox musical it shouldn't win? No matter how good a show it is? That's like saying no show written by ALW should ever win, or that Avenue Q and Lion King should have been shut out because some of the characters are puppets. I am so bored with this argument, and it really has no weight whatsoever. Just because the songs in Jersey Boys were not written in the last year for this particular show means it's not the best musical of the season - okey dokey. Cause the season was so stellar they had to dig really hard to round out certain categories. That sound you hear is the bottom of the barrel being scraped.
Jersey Boys is a critical and box office success story. That it's a "jukebox musical" is irrelevant.
I really think that this year the Tony's are going to play it safe. Give Best Musical to Drowsy Chaperone, Best Actor to Michael Cervis and Best Actress to Patti LuPone

And I should just add that I'm not happy at all about the Intiman winning the regional theare award. Speaking as a Seattle native, the past 5 or so years have seen the Intiman slide onto the backburner as Bartlett Sher (Intiman Artistic Director and now two-time Tony directing nominee) has become more prominent on the NY scene. His productions of classic works have been increasingly lackluster, topped off by a sad new adaptation of Three Sisters that totally misused Judy Kuhn last summer. A recent remounting of Our Town was also a mess. I feel like they're just giving the award because Sher is involved. I, however, do not mean to cast negatively on the otherwise fine work actors, designers, stage managers, etc. have done at the Intiman in recent years. If they were going to pick a Seattle theatre, I think ACT is far more deserving.

Why would anybody in their right mind think that The Wedding Singer deserves a Tony for...anything? The show is mediocre at best. The score WILL NOT win the Best Score award, Stephen Lynch hardly deserves the Best Actor award with competitors such as Michael Cerveris, John Lloyd Young, and Bob Martin, and the book is so pedestrian I'm surprised it even got a nomination.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion but I just don't understand why anyone would say that The Wedding Singer will win or deserves to win any of the major awards; some people might consider it mindless fun, but at least they should recognize it's a very mediocre piece of theater with a good cast. I won't criticize any further, I just felt like voicing out my comments because I was slightly bothered.
"apparently you are new to muscles unique taste of theater". neddy, it's very sad that you need to say what you said to feel good about yourself. TWS is nominated for best musical, so Im not the only one who enjoyed this show. And many BWW users and people in general were very happy to have seen an uplifting and entertaining musical. This show made me laugh my a** off and had a great time, if you have a problem with that or you need to make fun of me for that, it is your problem, not mine. I just happen to try to see most musicals and keep an open mind, and on the way i find that many good shows that people that need to feel superior and think they are better than the other person next to them, never get to appreciate. Their loss.

It makes me happy that other people think that Mano will/should win, haha.
I can't give a fair opinion on who should win since I haven't seen many of this season's productions. Just came back from school, and I hopefully will be all caught up by the time of the Tonys.
I agree Foscas. I saw Wedding Singer and read some of the very positive comments about it on this board and am still wondering whether I saw the same show....
The Wedding Singer SHOULD NOT have been nominated for Best Musical. Honestly, the nominators felt that it was the "best" new musical still running from this season, and rather than only nominate three musicals, they decided to nominate the less-than-mediocre Wedding Singer so that there can be another musical number done on the Tony awards. They should do "It's Your Wedding Day." Maybe this will get more people, who normally wouldn't go to see theater, to come out and see the show. This will help New York City. If they had nominated a better show (such as Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life or The Woman in White - IMO), no musical number would likely have been done on the Tony's and it wouldn't help business for NYC. (not that any of these non-theater lovers watch the Tony awards anyway...so I don't know why I'm rambling on about this)
The Tony awards are all political. It never has anything to do with what is really deserving. Therefore, The Wedding Singer was nominated for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. I'll even go out on a limb and say that some of the music from In My Life was better than the dreck I heard at the Al Hirschfeld a few weeks ago. End rant.
Well, you say The Wedding Singer shouldn't have been nominated, why do you think The Pajama Game is any better than TWS? TPG is as mediocre as TWS and has a horrible score, bad acting and it's dated. Even Kathleen Marshall couldn't save that.

Anyways, one man's trash can be another man's treasure. Let's be respectful to each others favorites. Plus as far as I remember i enjoyed Chita's show more than you! still i don't think her show deserved a Tony nod, and The Woman in White is my favorite, but we have to be realistic and we all knew it wouldn't get a nod for best musical.

I thought TCP was mediocre as well, a very flawed show with a weak score. But probably just because Oprah is involved in it, people who admire her will vote for the show, because she tells her fans to do so, like she tells her audience to see her show and they do. Jersey Boys is a good show, but i still can't get over the fact it is a juke box. I don't really have a favorite between these 2 shows.

Again, this is all subject to personal opinion, but I think The Pajama Game is a well-crafted musical with an EXCELLENT score. "Steam Heat," "Hernando's Hideaway," and "Hey There" are classic hit songs that have been around for over 50 years and people know them, love them, and still sing them. I will be SHOCKED if anyone in 50 years remembers any song from The Wedding Singer. You say even Kathleen couldn't save The Pajama Game? Well I think that Kathleen Marshall's direction and choreography are what made this revival so amazing. We may both have loved The Woman in White, muscle, but let's face it: we have completely different tastes in musicals.
As far as Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life goes, no, I did not enjoy the show. But at least it had good music (The Rink, Spider Woman, Bye Bye Birdie, West Side Story) and a living legend who I adore. As bad as Chita's show was, it was still better than Lennon, In My Life, Lestat, The Wedding Singer and Hot Feet, in my opinion. Updated On: 5/17/06 at 10:14 AM
I did enjoy Chita's show and although i got bored during The Pajama Game i tried finding good things about the show, probably Kelli O'Hara's acting and singing was the best thing about it. But i think that both Pajama Game and The Wedding Singer are both fluff, colorful, funny shows and they fit the same category.
