His book for Tootsie was great! But that show art is bland. And I’m not sure it’s really selling the source material so I’m not sure I see the point of the whole thing.
I too am hoping to be truly surprised by this one, because right now I'm confused about the tone and style and why it would attempt a big commercial Bway run. I can definitely see this playing well in regional markets though.
Glad to see John Behlmann get a Broadway leading role. So talented but frequently underutilized. And I love watching Kevin Cahoon and Andrew Durand (would Cahoon be able to move to Broadway with this given his Monarch schedule? I would guess he would only stay through mid-summer?)
On another note...Newell's bio is quite the read. "has an extensive list of credits both in Broadway and television"...proceeds to list 4 TV credits. "Broadway credits include"...proceeds to list only Broadway credit. "received overwhelming accolades"...proceeds to list the 5 major nominations he has. Someone could wave a million dollars in front of some managers/agents and they still just wouldn't be able to create a proper bio. He's had great success...no need to work so hard trying to be a wordsmith.
It turns out that "Shucked" is actually a brand new piece that isn't connected to "Hee Haw." I saw it opening night, and it was really enjoyable. Here are my review and interview with Robert Horn for a lot more details:
