Why does Moulin Rouge do a Thursday matinee?

There are tourists in town and there is less competition. Makes perfect sense. I wish more shows would stagger their matinees to give tourists more opportunities to see shows.

CATS started that non-traditional performance day. They did Monday performances while every other show was dark so if you wanted to see a show on Broadway on a Monday, your only option was CATS.

MOULIN ROUGE is doing this same scenario as no other show (aside from PHANTOM OF THE OPERA) has a Thursday matinee.

I've never understood why most shows have their matinees on the same day. Why compete with everyone else for theater-goers' money?

Why does Moulin Rouge do a Thursday matinee?

It’s about time shows started doing this. Different matinee days means tourists can see a lot more shows. When I’m in London, matinees one Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Saturday means I can fit in from 10-11 shows in a week.

Probably being a sure fire hit is also beneficial to having a flexible schedule. They don’t have to worry about the potential money loss that could come from having a diversion in the “normal” Broadway schedule because they know everyone is trying to come see the show.

If you're a hit, people will still fill the theater. But living about 2.5 hours outside of NYC, most cities around here have special bus deals ON Wednesdays specifically for matinees, so you're not going to get them to switch from the $25 bus on Wednesday to the $90 one on Thursday, heh.

Damnit, beat me to it. Sad day on this board that this wasn't the first answer.

"Six:The Musical" is doing matinees on Saturday and Sunday and none during the week.

Mormon has done Friday matinees in the summer in the past. I can't remember if it's been every summer, though.

Haterobics, thanks for bringing this up. I've always wondered if ''Moulin Rouge!'' is missing out on a larger pool of theatergoers that comes into town for Wed. matinees. Are there many buses that cater to Thurs. matinees?
