Posted: 10/20/04 at 1:57pmThose were Winkie Gurads. The Winkies are the people who live in the Western region of Oz.

The region, I believe, is called the Vinkus.
I could be wrong, though.

Posted: 10/20/04 at 2:10pmNo, you're right. In the book that's where Elphaba goes to talk to Fiyero's wife. I forget her name, though.

Posted: 10/20/04 at 2:11pmIt was made up by the author, which it's probably why you never heard of it before.

It took me a minute to figure out he had blue diamonds on the side of his face. And is it me or does Elphaba look much greener in SF? Maybe they changed the make-up?
In the OZ books the Tin Woodman rules Winkie Country and the witch dies.

Winkies were also the name of certain Ensemble member in The Wiz--I was one once.
And also in the stage version of The Wizard of Oz that I did, some kids played Winkies as well as Munchkins. I was Glinda!
