That's what we were just discussing...

Seaweed - do you remember which review that was in?

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Capn- it was in this review

http://www.thehotbutton.com/today/hot.button/2007_thb/070713_fri.html

BUT I looked up the 80th Annual Academy Award rules, and they state:

An original song consists of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. There must be a clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition (not necessarily visually presented) of both lyric and melody, used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.

-and "Come So Far" is the first music cue in the credits- so it is eligible.

"Zac is sweet as can be. He's very much just a sweet kid from California who happens to have a face that looks like it was drawn by Michelangelo, (if Michelangelo did anime)."
-Adam Shankman.

"I haven't left this building since Windows 3.1!"

"Celebrating a birthday this week: Rene Descartes is 412! Do you know who he is? Then why are you watching this show? You could probably get into college and even get one of those job things. As for the rest of us; Amanda Bynes is 22! Yay!"

Ahh, OK, David Poland. He's in the know...even though his opinions are tainted.

I'm aware of the rules of last year's Oscar season...however I believe there was an announcement about a rules change for THIS year's awards...no?

I went to the Academy's website- where they list the rules.. and the best song category is indeed different from last years- and seems to change consistantly from year to year.

I think Come so Far is one of the most wonderful songs I've heard in the last years and I'll be THRILLED if it gets an Oscar nomination and ecstatic if it wins !!!

People are claiming that this is the best reviewed film of the year so far, but they must be forgetting KNOCKED UP.

I love the song as well.

I actually see the song as being Motormouth, Tracy, Link, and Seaweeds return to The Corny Collins Show's final episode.

Sometime in the late 60's.

But thats just me and my OCD.

No one is speculating a Best Makeup nod, which I think is probably a sure bet (CLICK?)...

And as for the Golden Globes, we can count on SWEENEY (is it's at all good) and KNOCKED UP taking two of the spots. HAIRSPRAY will most likely take a spot. But KNOCKED UP has been much more critically acclaimed and will be honored, most likely. No other awards have honored Jud Aptaw's brilliant films, and I think the Golden Globes might celebrate by giving KNOCKED UP the award.

However, that all could change by awards season. KNOCKED UP could be completely forgotten or completely distasteful to voters.

BUT... I would say HAIRSPRAY's best bet for any acting nomination at the Oscars is for Christopher Walken in the supporting actor category. (He was nominated for CATCH ME IF YOU CAN for a role that was completely forgettable and won the SAG.)

Travolta will be considered leading, and New Line will campaign as such. Blonsky is up in the air, but something tells me that New Line will campaign her as leading. So, she will have a chance at a Golden Globe nomination.

I think SWEENEY, unfortunately, will become HAIRSPRAY biggest competition. I have a good feeling that SWEENEY will take directing, writing, and acting nods left and right, leaving HAIRSPRAY left out.

BUT... who knows? Pheiffer could pull of a nod at the Globes (come on, Ben Affleck in HOLLYWOODLAND?). Walken could take home another SAG, and in turn, create even more buzz for the film and his performance for the Oscars.

Those speculating that Allison Janney will be nominated are just being stupid. She's on the screen for about five minutes, and her performance is nowhere near the level of comedic power as Leslie Mann's brilliant (and award worthy) performance in KNOCKED UP.

If anyone takes a supporting actress nod, it will be Pheiffer. However, her chances are slim to none.

We can look for, however, a possible SAG nod and win for Best Ensemble, which may, in turn, create tons of new Oscar buzz. The SAGs love casts full of stars (BOBBY, anyone?).

As for Best Original Song, I would say COME SO FAR and LADIES CHOICE have a pretty good chance of getting a nod, but the latter may have some trouble with Efron's name attached to it. I don't know, but I have a feeling the Oscar voters still have a bad taste for anything HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL.

A nod for Sound Mixing (and win) is pretty much a lock, unless SWEENEY pulls through with something spectacular. The Oscars like Sondheim (DICK TRACY...). Costumes are a possibility, although I found Tracy's WELCOME TO THE 60'S dress rather awful.

Brittany Snow, Elijah Kelly, Zac Efron, and Blonsky will all fair well at other awards like the MTV awards, Teen Choice, People's Choice, and the Nickelodeon Awards.

I wouldn't say Latifah has much of a chance of grabbing any nods. She had her moment to shine in CHICAGO, and was rewarded for it. Her performance in HAIRSPRAY is good, but not stellar.

I agree with everyone who has said this movie in NOT an Oscar movie. It has many things going against it. It is arriving very early in the season. It's a comedy. It's funny. It's a musical. It's a "teen-based" film. However, it does have it's stellar cast to give it an edge.

I think it all boils down to how good SWEENEY is. If SWEENEY and HAIRSPRAY are equally as good, SWEENEY will have the edge.

We shall see...

Based on reviews, it should, but it's only July. I think by the time nomination time comes around, it'll be forgotten about.

It'll definitely get nominated for some Golden Globes though.

Best Actor Musical/Comedy for Travolta
Best Actress Musical/Comedy for Blonsky
Best Picture Musical/Comedy

and maybe more.

I think it's gonna have to go some to be even considered for Oscars. The Golden Globes are usually more friendly to musical movies. Bernadette Peters, Twiggy and even Madonna have all won Best Actress awards at the Golden Globes for musical roles, but were all snubbed come Oscar time, so there's hope for Blonsky yet.

Is that fact that this film is looking to be hit enough for people. I for one am not bothered if it does or does not get nominated for Oscars. Just being a hit movie musical is enough for me.

I didn't even care if it was a hit, as long as it was good....or once I heard that Adam Shankman was directing, I lowered my expectations to as long as it wasn't a train wreck.

And he made me proud; It WAS a good film! (Not Great though, but hey, it's progress compared to his other travesties).

SWEENEY is only a threat to HAIRSPRAY in the technical awards (I dont believe there are new songs in SWEENEY?). SWEENEY is buzzed to be a strong contender for Pic, Director, Actor, Supporting cast, Screenplay, and all the technicals. That pre-existed when the film was announced. HAIRSPRAY has no impact on SWEENEY's chances right now. It's up to how the film is received when it's released.

It's not a SWEENEY -vs- HAIRSPRAY. It's HAIRSPRAY -vs- 'everything else.' And the Oscar forecast right now is that HAIRSPRAY will be overshadowed by the films in the second half of the year. We'll see.

This and Sweeney will clean up at the Golden Globes.

I am guessing they will get noms for:

Best Original Song
Best Score
Best Actor (JT)

Possible:

Costumes?
Art Direction

I think JT was soo great. Infinetly better than Harvey. I love the new lyrics at the end of Welcome to the 60s with JT and Niki. It's sweeter than candy.

I hate to sound pessimistic and negative but I've gotta agree that the chances of Hairspray getting nominated for any major Oscar categories are slim to none. I saw the movie the other day and while it was very good and very entertaining, it didn't scream "Oscar!" at any point. It certainly wasn't a candidate for Best Picture IMHO. I think at the most it might get a Best Song nod a maybe some design nods. It'll most definatly get some Golden Globe noms, but I wouldn't count on it getting any Oscar nominations.

Like other people already said, Sweeney Todd will most likely be Hairspray's biggest competition. I think if Sweeney is good, Hairspray will be forgetten, and the Acadamey probably wouldn't nominate two movie musicals because it would put them into competition with each other.

I dont want to comment on Sweeney as i havent seen anything yet,but if it's recieved well i really thing this could be Depp's year for all major awards.

Many people will go and see this for Burton and Depp and be totally unaware of it's musical history. Fingers crossed.

No, I think SWEENEY will have a serious impact on HAIRSPRAY.

The Oscars won't accept (meaning nominate for ANYTHING) two musicals in one season.

I take that back a little.

I mean to say that if SWEENEY becomes the Oscar baby it is buzzed to be, HAIRSPRAY's chances at any major awards or even nods are slim to none.

"Doubt it. Mainstream audiences are still not movie musical fans, and theyr'e not going to line up to see Hairspray -- it's too campy for Amerika, and it doesn't have the star power Chicago had, for example.

Wow, so wrong on so many levels. Do the names "Beauty & The Beast", "The Lion King, "The Little Mermaid", "High School Musical" ring a bell? They are FAMILY musicals and we haven't had a big screen one in years. Disney stopped making them in favor of Pixar. "Chicago", "Dreamgirls" and especially "RENT" weren't family oriented films. "Hairspray" plays to all audiences. Do you honestly think Zellwegger, Jones and Gere are bigger draws than Travolta? Do you actually know who Zack Efron and Amanda Bynes are?

P.S. By Decemeber, every member of The Academy will the "Hairspray" DVD and it will not be forgotten.

John Travolta better than Harvey, or even Bruce? What are you smoking?

It's a different interpretation, definitely, but hardly a completely successful one.

I think the different interpretation was needed. I think the casting the Bway show has always been find a man who can play it drag-like. Harvey was just so hard to understand and I had good seats. I would bet money he gets and Oscar nomination.

This movie made a crap load of money for a little old musical. I'm quite surprised. It opened against Hairy Potter book and movie and Adam Sandler. That is tough competition.

I can’t imagine Sweeney making this kind of money or even being universally praised….
