from what ive read Hairspray will have a holiday dvd release- and the will be the first HD DVD /Blue Ray disc for New Line Home Entertainment.

You'd know better than I, but I thought that if it could be proved it wasn't written specifically for the film, a song would be ruled ineligible.
You are 100% correct. And yes, that tune from Once will win best song. I'd bet my vacation home on it.

Posted: 7/23/07 at 5:18pmHairspray and Rent. Apples and Oranges. Hairspray is on track to become the best reviewed movie musical of the 21 century with 93% great reviews. Rent, I'm sure is the worst reviewed at 48%. How in the world did anyone seriously think Rent would get Oscar nominations with these types of reviews. At least Hairspray is critically acclaimed so Oscar talk isn't delusional. For Rent, it would have been. I'm sure if there was Oscar talk regarding rent it was done as a Joke. Just as talking Razzies for Hairspray would be a joke. I actually saw a thread asking would Hairspray be nominated for Razzies, I think not.

Actually, no. Although admittedly, the Oscar talk on this board started before the movie was released. Even Anthony Rapp discussed the possibility of the movie receiving award nominations. I'm not saying I ever agreed with the Oscar talk. 
I'm just calling it how I remember.

I can't believe people seriously think that Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah, Alison Janney, James Marsden, or Nikki Blonsky would get nominations for this film.
Apart from the fact that I didn't think much of the movie, there are a plethora of films that I enjoy and I can still be realistic enough to tell that most of them are not Oscar material. No one on that screen had a role that screamed Oscar, perhaps John Travolta could come close to snagging a nod but even then I would highly doubt it.
The film does not try at any point to be an Oscar movie so I don't see why people are predicting nominations (though I expect some sound design nods).

As much as i Love the film i dont think it will get any oscar nods in the higher categories.
It will however do really well at the Globes , MTV Awards, Disney awards etc etc.As its a young fun summer film.
Saying that though i have been a huge film fan for many years and follow the oscars and have to say that sometimes they surprise you and do nominate the Big fun summer films (pirates etc) especially if the critical reception of the movie has been high(and no one can deny that its reviews have been Ground breaking)
Personally though i don't think it will, But the producers wont give a damn anyway as the Reviews they have just received will keep them smiling for years to come.And with it having such a low budget and such a huge release the profits will be great(especially when the dvd comes out)

Do I think Hairspray will get nominated? Nah, but if some of those movies were nominated then I suppose anything is possible.

Yes, in addition to BABE receiving a Best Picture Oscar nomination, it also was nominated for six, count 'em, six other Oscars. (It won for Best Visual Effects, but was also nominated for Pic, Supp Actor (James Cromwell), Art Direction, Best Director, Film Editing, and Adapted Screenplay.)
