THE PROM has the opportunity to appeal to two very distinct groups of people -- teenagers/young woke people, and fans of splashy Broadway musical comedies. It remains to be seen if the show will be 100% successful in appealing to those groups (I wonder how much work has been done since Atlanta?), but I'm rooting for its success. And they couldn't have a better cast of musical-comedy hams!

I think if people buy tickets, they'll do OK... and if people don't buy tickets, then they'll have a problem.

Lots of us saw it in the Atlanta try-out with the same cast.

I saw it in Atlanta with the same cast and liked a lot about it. It was extremely funny (I won't spoil some of the better gags, but Broadway fans will get a true kick out of it) and the songs and staging were great.... but needed a lot of work-- the opening number, set at a opening night party, was so outdated as to resemble nothing so much as a Carol Burnett Show sketch (and not in a good way). Plus, the depiction of contemporary small-town high school life was ridiculous-- seems as though nobody knew how to use the internet or share information or anything (except, well, when convenient). All the characters seemed to be written circa 1985, yet the show was set 'today' (and requires you to believe in the power of social media in a very Dear Evan Hansen kind of way). These were all very, very fixable things, though-- and the cast was wonderful, many gags landed beautifully and I am looking forward (very much) to seeing it again.

I live isn Atlanta- and for some reason, did not hear about it until the last weekend when it was sold out. But a few people I know did get to see it and liked it very much. I think this is the perfect time for a musical with this subject matter- and if it is well done- funny, entertaining,- with something to say- then it should be a crowd pleaser. If Fun Home can be a hit- why not The Prom?

I'm so hopeful about it. The cast is terrific, the creative team has turned in good-to-great work on Broadway before, and the story sounds like a delight. In this year of really terrible new musicals so far with not a ton on the horizon that I'm especially excited about, I've got my fingers crossed that this will be the little show that could and ends up being a delight. Time will tell!

I wonder why the OP didn't post: "Will The Prom be a Hit?"

Will The Prom flop? As much as I hope not, because it's nice to have a wholly original musical...hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Sadly, they put all of their focus on the body of their message, instead of the title.

From what I've seen on twitter (gross, I know) a lot of younger theater goers are pretty excited for this. Seems like it could be funny, has good representation of LGBTQ characters. Plus a lot of people more well known/popular with people on Twitter (mean girls cast, ect) are involved or had been involved in this project.

I didn't see the show in Atlanta and I don't know a whole lot about it, but I was speaking to a member of the cast last week and they told me that a lot of work and changes had been made for the Broadway transfer and there have been a few cast changes (I don't know who). I'm rooting hard for the show though- it already has the support of the younger stan crowd and I'm always in support of original theatre. Not to mention that its got a great cast (Beth Leavel AND Brooks Ashmankas??)

Well, there have been a lot of changes to the cast in terms of the ensemble.
Glad to hear they’re working on it. I think it’ll have to come down to word-of-mouth. The “stan” crowd can’t keep a show open, so it’ll need to find a way to attract the general public and create some hype. It’s possible, but the hype has yet to exist, so I’m not sure.
