It was a really fun silly broadway show.
I do think the cultural reference was stronger in the 2000s cause it appealed to boomers who saw it in their teens and twenties.
But maybe it could have an off broadway revival that could be successful with someone funny in the lead?
Would love to see Jennifer Simard as the Jackie Hoffman muse

I saw the national tour open in Costa Mesa in 09. It was okay. Not all the self references were necessary. But at least the energy, music and romance made the show decent.

As someone who saw it 40-something times? Well sure, if they can find a cast that matched the perfection of the opening night cast. (Sorry, James Carpinello, but the first I time saw it was in previews with him as Sonny, and it didn't work.) I can certainly imagine an environmental theatre production Off-Broadway somewhere. Or in someplace like Circle in the Square, which did that totally fun Rocky Horror revival.

This would be fun somewhere like New World Stages or, essentially, a smaller venue in general.
I desperately wish for that cancelled tour with Jinkx Monsoon and Ginger Minj to be brought back from the dead. Even if it’s just for a mini-tour.
This feels like a perfect candidate for a Little Shop-esque high profile revival Off-Broadway. I agree, New World Stages would be a great place for it (normally I don't mean that as a compliment, but this time I do!). I saw a local production of it before I lived in New York, and I totally loved it! It's a real delight.
I agree Jennifer Simmard in any role would be fantastic.
Joel Perez as Sonny?
Heléne Yorke as Clio?
Andy Groteleuschen as Zeus? (He doesn't necessarily fit the role, but the show overall fits his style of humor so well!)
And honestly, Mary Testa + Jackie Hoffman could easily come back and reprise their roles. Though it might mean shutting Jennifer Simmard out (is there another role for her in this hypothetic revival?)
The revised “small version” is more chaotic and scrappy than the original. I think the tour was going to be the small one.

Helene Yorke as Clio is inspired casting
Not that it would ever happen, but Ian McKellan wants to do a musical, right? 😉
Claybourne Elder for Sonny
Taylor Louderman for Clio
I honestly could see Danny Burstein or Ron Raines as Danny/Zeus
Jennifer Simard and Alexandra Billings as the Evil Muses
Maybe someplace like St. Mark's Place (Off-off-Bway). Could lend itself really well to a seedy ultra-downtown "poor theatre" vibe (I don't say "poor theatre" in a derogatory way). I don't see this EVER being revived in a first-class Broadway production.
If they transformed Circle in the Square or Studio 54 into a roller rink, I’m all for a Broadway revival. But a small and scrappy Off-Broadway production would work as well, as that’s what it felt like on Broadway. I saw that production multiple times and it is the most fun I’ve ever had at a Broadway show.

I really love the idea of it small and scrappy off broadway.
I'm glad people find it a good idea for it to come back, cause culturally the reference is definitely falling into obscurity.
It almost seems like the thing to do is to make it stand as its own thing away from the movie. Make the parody winks catch it or you'll miss it.

Honestly get one of those Drag Race girls to headline it and it definitely would be a hit
Let’s be real, the original Broadway production was pretty small and scrappy.
I saw it four or five times. What fun.
