What planet are you on (or school) -the only Broadway production closed a mere 2 years ago. It was the first time it was seen on Broadway and was so dire it deserved its early elimination. Best forgotten.

Posted: 1/18/08 at 8:04pmWhat do you mean? The show should have stayed there longer. I had the chance to see it but knew nothing about it. Then I went home after meeting the puppetier and watched the movie and automatically wanted to get my ass back to New York to see it.

As the last revival proved, staying faithful to the original material didn't work (as shown by the original production in Florida).
I only saw the touring production of the show with Anthony Rapp and Tari Kelly, and I can honestly say that that's the version that I fell in love with. I loved the set design, the huge hydraulic plants, and most of all the cast.
I think the cast is where the recent Broadway revival fell apart. I never saw the show on Broadway, but I've listened to the recording a lot. I think Hunter Foster, Douglas Sills, and Rob Bartlett were very much miscast. They all seemed to be trying to hard to accentuate the stereotypes of their roles: nerdy, shallow, and crazy. There wasn't any depth or character in their performances as far as I could tell. I personally loved Kerry Butler, but a lot of people didn't seem to so I must be missing something in hearing only the score.
If the cast came together well, I think the show would work well even in a huge Broadway theater (I saw it in the 2,000-seat Ahmanson in Los Angeles and it didn't seem dwarfed at all by the huge theater). It's a wonderful show and I think under the right circumstances it could do quite well on Broadway.

Posted: 1/18/08 at 8:09pmI missed seeing it as well, so that's at least three of us who missed it and would like to see a revival :) However, as others have said, I can't imagine there will be one soon. And from reading what they have written, perhaps it's better off that way.

Posted: 1/18/08 at 8:21pmI loved the new production. I saw it on tour with Jonathon Rayson and Tari Kelly. The show and cast were fantastic. I also think the cast recording is fabulous.

Posted: 1/18/08 at 8:59pmI never saw it on broadway, but did have the fortuane of seeing the tour (which I heard was different due to changes made) So technically, I never saw the revival. I saw the tour.

Posted: 1/18/08 at 9:06pmIt was very enjoyable (I missed the original) but talk of reviving it is way to early.

Posted: 1/18/08 at 10:04pmI like the revival cast recording because it's the entire score. But I can definitely see where it went wrong. It isn't meant to be a cartoon, this piece, is it?

The revival was actually really wonderful. I saw it multiple times because it was so magnetic.
And in addition to the INCREDIBLE puppetry, the best thing this production had going for it was its pitch perfect casting. Douglas Sills and Rob Bartlett, in particular, gave inspired, scene-stealing performances.

Just over the river at The Paper Mill Playhouse, they are doing it in June. I'll be there, but they are going to have to do try really hard to best that plant on Broadway.

I'm usually not what I would consider to be a "purist" when it comes to somebody else playing roles, but...
I don't know if I could ever accept anybody but Ellen Greene as Audrey. I love her performance in the film, which I practically grew up with, so, I just don't know...
I'd love to finally see it on stage though, so, sure!
