#56re: Your favorite Elphaba....
Posted: 6/2/08 at 5:52pm^It does almost seem like people who like Idina, don't like SJB and vice versa. Hmmm.

#59re: Your favorite Elphaba....
Posted: 6/2/08 at 6:06pmIdina went flat on a lot of her songs when I saw her...

Posted: 6/2/08 at 6:55pmStephanie by far!!!! After all Steven Schwartz wrote the music with Stephanie's voice as the prototype. Had she originated a Broadway production prior to working with Schwartz, they would have given SJB the part hands down. As it was she was Idina's Standby/Understudy, and SJB did have the run for the first National Tour.

Well I can tell you who my least favorite is - Stephanie J. Block. None of the other Elphaba's have caused me to not want to continue listening to them. She is the weakest singer, imho.
My favorite is probably Brandi. I happen to like the black ones... they have the most soul in their voice. Hers was very powerful, too.

Wow...this thread, on this board? I'm kind of stunned!
Rather than voting, I'm just going to say (for those new to this conversation--and there are apparently some) that I think the Idina/Steph thing is less philosophical and more about vocal quality (quality as in characteristics, not quality as in "good" or "bad"). If you like a brighter sound, Idina is probably for you. If you prefer a darker sound, you'll probably like Steph better.
There. I think that was pretty diplomatic.

Posted: 6/2/08 at 8:17pmMy favorite is by far Carmen Cusack. I have seen Idina, Julia Murney, Kristy Cates and Dee Roscioli. I thought they were all very good but Carmen by far was the best that I have seen. With Julia a very close second.

hmmm
I'm going to have to give it up too...
Julia Murney..She hands down had the best acting for the role of Elphaba. She reminded me of the Wicked Witch from the movie towards the end of the show.
Shoshana Bean...that girl sang the S$^& out of those songs and I applaud her for that. She brought a funny side to Elphaba as well that I think most actresses miss when playing Elphaba
Eden Espinosa...She brought it every time. Her "NO GOOD DEED" is hands down the best version of have ever heard.
Idina...MUCH RESPECT she set the pace.
SJB...same as well.

My favorites are Stephanie and Julia.

I try not to get argumentative on this board, but YOU'RE ALL WRONG. The only credible answer is Margaret Hamilton.

All of you saying Margaret Hamilton was the best ELPHABA are terribly wrong, she was never Elphaba, she was just the WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST! Elphaba didn't exsist in The Wizard of Oz, only the Wicked Witch of The West did!
Another reason you can't say Margret, she didn't sing the songs that you think of when you say Elphaba... The Wzard and I, Defying Gravity, No Good Deed etc.

Lisa Brescia. No comparison, the more I think of it.
in April I was wowed. I felt like she was the most NATURAL. Her Defying Gravity was stunning, and not forced. Love her.

Eden is the best ever!
Shoshanna is 2nd
Idina is the worst. I know I'm going to get bashed for this but I personally think that her vocals are not very good.

I can't really pick favorites, but of the 3 that I have seen the order would be:
1. Eden Espinosa (LA)
2. Donna Vivino (Standby - National Tour)
3. Carmen Cusack (she was sick when I saw her)
I would love to see SJB, but alas, a NYC excursion is not in my foreseeable future.
